Seventy Seven Energy Inc. (77NRG)

VMware and Seventy Seven Energy (77NRG)

Headquartered in Oklahoma City, Seventy Seven Energy provides a wide range of wellsite services and equipment to U.S. land-based exploration and production customers operating in unconventional resource plays.

VMware Horizon Air, vCloud Air, and AirWatch, all being hosted solutions, gave Seventy Seven Energy the flexibility to manage the constant acquisition and divesture cycle of the oil industry.

“We chose to use VMware over some of the other competitors in the market because VMware had been around for years, and we trust the organization.”

“What we found from VMware was a maturity that we didn't find in the other vendors -- that made it easy, to make the transition.”

— Jarin Dykstra, Sr. Manager, Information Systems, Seventy Seven Energy

Seventy Seven Energy Inc. (77NRG)

Seventy Seven Energy goes 100% cloud in only four months with VMware and AirWatch Solutions

In the volatile oil and gas industry, Seventy Seven Energy (77NRG) needed a virtualization solution that could scale quickly to support thousands of users under a tight deadline. With a small IT staff and limited resources, the company wanted a complete cloud-hosted solution. With a combined VMware Horizon® Air™, VMware vCloud® Air™ and AirWatch® Enterprise Mobility Management solution, 77NRG successfully delivered virtualized resources to 2,500 employees within just four months.

“VMware Horizon Air enables employees to access their desktop from any location, even at Grandma's house. I've had employees approach me to tell me how great it is that they can get home and start working exactly where they left off in the field. And they can use the same familiar desktop they have on other devices. This has been the key for users – they love it.”

— Jarin Dykstra, Sr. Manager, Information Systems, Seventy Seven Energy

VMware Professional Services helped 77NRG virtualize its desktops for anytime anywhere use for its employees including drilling sites, meeting its goals and avoiding penalty fees

"Because we were spun off from another organization, we had a very short time window to stand up our own infrastructure and begin delivering our own applications. With Horizon Air and VMware Professional Services, we were able to do that in just a few months."

— Jarin Dykstra, IT Director, Seventy Seven Energy

Shanghai Police College

Virtual SAN enables Shanghai Police College to build a high performance storage architecture

The Shanghai Police College was founded in 1949 and is the only college in Shanghai to offer full-time programs for individuals wanting to join the police force. It is also the only police academy in China to be included by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as part of the first cohort in the Model Higher Vocational Colleges scheme.

Faced with operational management pressures and high IT costs, the Shanghai Police College embarked on a project to improve utilization of IT resources and cut down storage costs. They chose virtualization solutions from VMware, viz. vSphere and Virtual SAN, to provide hardware consolidation and rebuild their IT infrastructure. This enabled them to build a dynamic, flexible server and storage architecture, optimized for high performance, at a significantly lower TCO compared to traditional storage. Shanghai Police College have deployed several teaching and library applications along with knowledge and video databases on Virtual SAN. They plan to increase their Virtual SAN environment in the future.

“By using VMware vSphere 5.5 with Virtual SAN, we have simplified our management and operational processes while reducing costs, so we can move a steady step toward SDDC and the ‘Educational Cloud’.”

— Yu Er, Senior Engineer, IT Office of the Shanghai Police College

Somerset School District

K-12 education has changed dramatically in recent years. According to Sara Eichten, principal at Somerset Middle School in Wisconsin, “The Common Core State Standards have drastically changed what we need to be doing with our students in both English language arts and mathematics, as well as focusing on disciplinary literacy in science, social studies, and other related arts classes.” So in May 2013 when Somerset School District was selected to participate in a pilot program to test the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) platform to meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, it looked to VMware for help. VMware Horizon View helped ease the deployment of the rigorous testing platform and deliver a seamless user experience to students.

"With VMware Horizon View, we didn’t experience any technical issues when we did the [Smarter Balanced] pilot. People were concerned about audio sound quality, videos, mouse movements—those things that are critical in high-stakes testing—but we saw no performance issues whatsoever in our environment. The virtual environment performed the way we expected it to, and we’re very happy with the results.”

— Ryan Sicard, Director of IT, Somerset School District

SSOE Group

SSOE Group is an Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management firm with 1200 employees located in 29 offices across 7 countries. SSOE leverages the best talent that they have to complete client projects no matter where that talent is located and this requires global collaboration in a 3D environment. SSOE selected a solution utilizing VMware Horizon View, Cisco, and NVIDIA to deliver the 3D graphics performance required from applications such as Autodesk Revit to complete projects in a virtualized desktop environment.

"I’d absolutely recommend the Cisco Invidia VMware Horizon View solution to other companies who are using graphically intensive applications. It's the best of all possible worlds. With Cisco you're getting the hardware, reliability, performance, price point. With Invidia, the graphics acceleration, simply unmatched in a solution like this. And obviously VMware Horizon View is producing the capability for me to get a global work force collaborating in one location, using disparate people from anywhere."

State Department of Health

State’s Department of Health Deploys VMware Virtual SAN to Increase Storage Capacity and Performance

The Bureau of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) plays an important role in health departments’ mission of delivering healthy outcomes to all of their state’s inhabitants. Thus, when an aging, out-of-capacity storage solution began to hinder efficient delivery of the bureau’s services in one state, the Department of Health (DOH) there needed to take action. To do so, it turned to VMware Virtual SAN™, which delivered more capacity for less cost and also improved application and system performance.

“In the past, we were always worried about over-provisioning, but with the thin provisioning afforded by VMware Virtual SAN we’ve gained so much space, this is simply not an issue.”

— Network Administrator, State Department of Health

STV Engineering

STV Engineering uses VMware Horizon along with NVIDIA GRID technology to deliver high performance 3D graphics performance to its workers. They use desktop virtualization to comply with their security policy when dealing with external workers and also use desktop virtualization in case workers are unable to come to the office due to a natural disaster such as what they experienced with Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

"Like many organization we have security concerns and compliance concerns we need to abide by. VDI allowed us to bring the data to one central location housed within STV, so we could provide access to external stakeholders. No matter where the client was, we knew where the data would be."

— Matt Dierolf, Manager Network Systems, STV

Tamkang University

Tamkang University Software Cloud Runs on Virtual SAN and Horizon View

Tamkang Software Cloud, built by Tamkang University’s Office of Information Services in 2013, is designed to improve the university’s software utilization and meet the mobile application needs of its faculty and students. They chose VMware Horizon View as the desktop interface coupled with VMware Virtual SAN as their hyperconverged infrastructure platform to build a scalable, efficient cloud through which students could access software resources on their own mobile devices anytime, anywhere.

“VMware is the leading company which can provide us trusted products and technologies. Since the target users of the Software Cloud are 28,000 faculty members and students, we cannot risk ourselves to use technologies that have not been market-tested. Our students will be able to develop 3D applications though the software cloud, with Virtual SAN providing software-defined storage on the back-end for lower TCO.”

— Hwang Ming-ta, Professor & Head of Office of Information Services, Tamkang University
