Navicure

Healthcare claims company Navicure is gaining better control and optimization across its IT infrastructure thanks to a comprehensive monitoring and operational management approach built on VMware.

"vCenter Operations Manager is key to understanding your infrastructure. If you don’t have it today, you're going to be very reactive to some of your pains and the troubles you're dealing with. It allows you to project where you're growing and where you need to put your money into resources, whether that's more storage, compute resources, or network resources."

— Donald Wilkins, Director of IT

North Carolina State University

There is no substitute for experience when it comes to operating powerful machines. As part of Naval ROTC training at NC State University, midshipmen learn how to drive any vessel in the U.S. Navy fleet. NC State University Libraries deployed VMware Horizon View to securely deliver a virtual environment with the 3D graphics required for ROTC training. Authorized users can securely access the entire simulated training environment in software from a multipurpose creativity studio. Yet 3D virtualization isn’t just for training, NC State University students, faculty, and staff in other disciplines can also use virtual desktops to access critical 3D design software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.

“Naval ROTC is using Hunt Library resources for a simulation program that gives us the flexibility to build different scenarios, different classes of ships, train the students, and then tear that training down in an instant and move the resources over to something else. That flexibility is exactly what universities need in the future.”

— Dr. Marc Hoit, Vice Chancellor for IT and CIO, NC State University

North Carolina State University

Everywhere you look on today’s university campuses, you see devices—from laptops to smartphones to tablets. NC State University is no exception. It set the model for how to successfully embrace leading-edge technology and the bring your own device (BYOD) trend with the opening of the James B. Hunt Jr. Library in April 2013. In support of NC State University’s blended learning vision, VMware Horizon View enables anytime, anywhere, any-device access to applications and data, including demanding 3D graphics applications. Desktop services are available anywhere they are needed—on or off the campus—fully supporting a distributed computing environment and student, faculty, and staff device preferences.

“The Hunt Library is the visible lighthouse that says this is a technology leader and it’s everything from the high resolution rooms where you can do innovation to the virtualized desktops that allow students, faculty, and staff to use their services anywhere, anytime they need them.”

— Dr. Marc Hoit, Vice Chancellor for IT and CIO, NC State University

Northrim Bank

Northrim Bank believes that customers deserve the very highest level of service. VMware Horizon View is helping the bank meet its “Customer First Service” goals by enabling workforce mobility between headquarters and branch offices, and serving as a critical component of the bank’s “branch in a box” high-availability solution. Horizon View—together with Cisco UCS E-Series Servers and Atlantis Computing ILIO data-storage technologies—reduces costs, keeps the bank in compliance, and enables always-on access to applications for business-critical processes performed by management, bank tellers, and loan originators.

“With Horizon View, provisioning desktops, which used to be a very difficult, very manual task has become automated and it’s easy for us to deploy not just one or two, but 10 or 20 desktops within a few minutes. With the ability to have different snapshots, different versions and different gold images, we can tailor the user desktop to the business need.”

— Erick Stoeckle , Network and Systems Manager, Northrim Bank

OGL Computer Services

OGL Computer Uses VMware App Volumes Solution to Grow Services and Save Costs in Citrix Environment

Small to medium-size enterprises in the United Kingdom rely on OGL Computer for a range of cloud services, on-premises solutions, and IT support. But OGL’s launch of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) services was stymied by the overhead of its Citrix solution and the limited functionality of other VDI delivery technologies. By implementing the VMware App Volumes™ application management solution, OGL built a multitenant VDI environment that delivers an extensive range of applications to customers in real time, with full application functionality on any device. It also reduces OpEx and CapEx.

“A really big thing for us is that App Volumes gives all applications 100 percent functionality, just as if they were installed natively to the underlying OS. App Volumes delivers huge advantages in provisioning, ongoing support, and customer satisfaction.”

— Mark Slater, Technical Architect, OGL Computer Services

Oregon State University

The IT department at Oregon State University manages two open-use computer labs and one computer-equipped classroom. Because of financial restrictions, the university had originally purchased all of its servers with local storage, but that infrastructure could not handle the school’s growing workloads, and it required time-consuming upkeep. The university turned to the new VMware Virtual SAN product, which addresses these and other concerns while offering a simple and scalable solution that fits within its budget.

“Before Virtual SAN, we had no ability to scale. Now… it’s a piece of cake; if I want to add additional capacity, I just add an additional server. I don’t have to worry about whether my SAN can grow or not.”

— Alan Sprague, System Administrator, Oregon State University

OSIS

Perfect Health: OSIS Provides 100 Percent Uptime for Its Healthcare Clients with VMware

OSIS cannot tolerate downtime. Community health centers rely on OSIS to host their healthcare applications, and if those are unavailable, patient care will suffer. After struggling with outages for years on the Microsoft Hyper-V platform, OSIS migrated to VMware vSphere with Operations Management and achieved 100 percent uptime of IT systems.

“We had bad experiences with Hyper-V. Practically my first day on the job, one of my first questions was, ‘Why don’t we have VMware?'"

"Moving to VMware has freed up a lot of time for the entire team.”

— Rob Frilling, Infrastructure Team Lead and Senior Virtualization Engineer
