Peirce College

Peirce College Delivers Reliable Online Classes with VMware vCloud Air Solution

Peirce College is a leader in online education, and it offers nationally ranked online bachelor’s degree programs. As it expanded its online classes, Peirce needed a stronger technology infrastructure. Its previous colocation facility was expensive and prone to crashes, and its data-transfer rate was limited to 2GB an hour. When Peirce implemented VMware vCloud® Air™ Virtual Private Cloud for its data center, it increased data speed, cut costs, and achieved rock-solid reliability in the cloud.

Peirce College provides practical, career-focused education for working adults through high-quality and affordable classes. Founded in Philadelphia in 1865, Peirce was one of the first accredited colleges in the United States to offer complete online degree programs. U.S. News & World Report has repeatedly named the college’s online bachelor’s degree programs among the nation’s best.

"Moving to VMware was a no-brainer. I know VMware works and works well. Everything has been rock-solid and easy to manage."

Their products are now a SaaS solution, giving their global customer base access to their intellectual property faster and more cost effectively.

“What we find is that the world is moving towards the cloud. Everybody knows that.”

“vCloud Air is unique in that it offers a virtual datacenter that can split across being on-premises and also in the cloud. And for us that is a critical factor because the way we manage our data requires some of it to be local and some of it to be centrally managed.”

Perforce software is used to manage teams of developers and their software and hardware products across all industries. Ed Horst and David Ackerman describe the deployment and use of vCloud Air and how that benefits their global customers.

“One of the unique things about vCloud Air is their willingness to setup SLAs or guaranteed ability of that system for the ones that are running in the vCloud Air environment. That’s critical to us. phoenixNAP

PhoenixNAP, a VMware vCloud Service Provider, Enables SureTax to Provide Secure, Highly Available Tax Calculation Services

To keep pace with rapid business growth without making a costly investment in computing hardware, SureTax engaged the Flexible Data Center Solutions platform by phoenixNAP, an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) provider offering cloud services based on VMware vCloud technologies. SureTax, which provides enterprises with real-time software-as-a-service tax calculations, used the private cloud and virtualized solutions to meet the privacy, performance, and high availability needs of its growing client base while realizing a rapid return on investment.

Pivotal

Pivotal Software Chooses Hybrid Cloud Platform to Connect Far-Flung Global Startup

As a joint venture of EMC and VMware, Pivotal Software was created with 1,400 employees, global operations, multiple mature business units and development projects, and no shared systems or facilities. The firm’s new IT group chose to deploy its core IT infrastructure on the VMware vCloud Air platform, connecting disparate parts and providing a foundation for shared systems and services.

Pivotal Software enables the creation of modern, cloud-native software applications that leverage big data and agile development practices. The company’s products combine apps, data, and analytics on an enterprise platform as a service powered by Cloud Foundry. Launched in 2013, Pivotal is a joint venture of EMC Corporation and VMware that brings together products, open source development projects, employees, and business units from both parent companies.

“If we had followed the traditional model of building or own physical infrastructure first, it would have diverted too much time, talent, and capital from the more important tasks of building the company. We were able to spin up the core IT infrastructure for a global organization very much quickly, with a minimal IT staff.”

— Mike Culbertson, Director of IT Infrastructure and Networking, Pivotal Software

“VMware vCloud Air is elastic, has lower-cost maintenance, has quicker deployment and has a global reach. It has been a solid start. Once we were up and running, it has been pretty seamless. VMware support is excellent and we will definitely continue to expand our use of VMWare vCloud Air to run more mission-critical apps for Pivotal.”

— Christopher Curtis, Vice President IT, Pivotal

Queens University of Charlotte

Queens University of Charlotte and VMware vCloud Air

What began as a small college for women in 1857 has evolved into a co-ed, comprehensive, master's-level university with a commitment to liberal arts and professional studies. Today, Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina serves approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students through its six accredited schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the McColl School of Business, the Blair College of Health (including the Presbyterian School of Nursing), the Cato School of Education, the Knight School of Communication and the Hayworth School of Graduate & Continuing Studies.

With a mission to provide a transformative educational experience and a global perspective, Queens University of Charlotte needs a platform that allows students to log in from anywhere, at any time to support its global learning and understanding initiatives—and that’s where VMware comes in.

VMware used vCloud Air to move the University’s production servers, without interruption to the domain controller for access management, ensuring Microsoft was continuously available for teachers and students to access emails. VMware vCloud Air was also used to host the University’s main website as well as a resource DNS server to be available 24/7 to alumni, prospective students, and donors.

Using vCloud Air Disaster Recovery, the University was able to host some of the apps they weren’t ready to move to the cloud like a CRM for recruiting students, fundraising servers, and other ERP systems.

“Queens University of Charlotte is growing and changing significantly with new programs and with new methods of teaching and delivering our mission to serve rather than to be served. And we require partners’ who can help us in that mission and VMWare has been one of those partners.”

— Brian Baute, Chief Information Officer (CIO), Queens University of Charlotte
