Shanghai Police College

Virtual SAN enables Shanghai Police College to build a high performance storage architecture

The Shanghai Police College was founded in 1949 and is the only college in Shanghai to offer full-time programs for individuals wanting to join the police force. It is also the only police academy in China to be included by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as part of the first cohort in the Model Higher Vocational Colleges scheme.

Faced with operational management pressures and high IT costs, the Shanghai Police College embarked on a project to improve utilization of IT resources and cut down storage costs. They chose virtualization solutions from VMware, viz. vSphere and Virtual SAN, to provide hardware consolidation and rebuild their IT infrastructure. This enabled them to build a dynamic, flexible server and storage architecture, optimized for high performance, at a significantly lower TCO compared to traditional storage. Shanghai Police College have deployed several teaching and library applications along with knowledge and video databases on Virtual SAN. They plan to increase their Virtual SAN environment in the future.

“By using VMware vSphere 5.5 with Virtual SAN, we have simplified our management and operational processes while reducing costs, so we can move a steady step toward SDDC and the ‘Educational Cloud’.”

— Yu Er, Senior Engineer, IT Office of the Shanghai Police College

Somerset School District

K-12 education has changed dramatically in recent years. According to Sara Eichten, principal at Somerset Middle School in Wisconsin, “The Common Core State Standards have drastically changed what we need to be doing with our students in both English language arts and mathematics, as well as focusing on disciplinary literacy in science, social studies, and other related arts classes.” So in May 2013 when Somerset School District was selected to participate in a pilot program to test the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) platform to meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, it looked to VMware for help. VMware Horizon View helped ease the deployment of the rigorous testing platform and deliver a seamless user experience to students.

"With VMware Horizon View, we didn’t experience any technical issues when we did the [Smarter Balanced] pilot. People were concerned about audio sound quality, videos, mouse movements—those things that are critical in high-stakes testing—but we saw no performance issues whatsoever in our environment. The virtual environment performed the way we expected it to, and we’re very happy with the results.”

— Ryan Sicard, Director of IT, Somerset School District
