California Natural Resources Agency

California Natural Resources Agency Gains Agility Across Multiple Agencies Through a Software-Defined Data Center Strategy

A Briefings Direct podcast on how a large state agency is harnessing virtualization to do more with less and remain agile and efficient.

“We consider VMware a strategic partner. We basically only want to work with business partners. We don’t want to work with vendors, because we don’t need someone to sell us something and walk away. VMware has been hand-in-hand with us for this whole journey.”

“From looking at VMware, virtualization is the standard. If you don’t take it on, then you really won’t be able to respond to business needs. When the official IT organization becomes obsolete, there are going to be ad-hoc IT organizations and those would become the norm. If you want to be relevant, you have to use every tool set that you can to provide the business needs.”

— Michael Hom, Data Center Chief in the IT InfrastructureServices Branch for the California Department of Water Resources

VIF International Education and VMware

User traffic on VIF International Education's Learning Center, an online professional development platform for K–12 educators, grew by more than 500 percent in one year, but its on-premises IT infrastructure couldn’t keep up. This mission-critical service was running on a single server blade without power or network redundancy, leading to unacceptably high downtime. By moving to the VMware vCloud® Air™ platform, VIF gained vastly higher availability and near-unlimited scalability, improved resource utilization by 300 percent, and reduced its IT systems management workload.

VIF International Education builds global education programs that prepare teachers and students for success in an interconnected world. Based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the firm supports teachers, schools, and school districts with programs for professional development and curriculum, language acquisition, and cultural exchange. VIF is proud to be a B Corp, certified to meet specific standards for social and environmental performance. VIF is dedicated to developing globally competent citizens with the skills to thrive in an increasingly global marketplace.

“VMware vCloud Air represents for us the opportunity to deliver on our mission to deliver global education for all.”

— David Young, CEO, VIF International Education

Yorkshire and Humber Commissioning Support

Yorkshire and Humber Commissioning Support increases GP productivity and enhances patient care with VMware® Horizon™ 6

Kingston University

Kingston University to transform student learning experience with mobile working and BYOD using VMware® Horizon™ 6 and Atlantis

As part of a campaign to position itself as the university of choice for today’s increasingly tech-savvy market, Kingston University is now using VMware Horizon 6 to transform the way IT services are delivered to its students and staff members. By allowing access to course materials and graphic intensive applications remotely and from any device, Kingston University has allowed its staff and students to work and study in the way which best suits them.

Additionally, the university has been able to manage its 7,000 physical desktops from a central management console, drastically cutting the time it takes to provide software updates including major operating system upgrades (Windows XP to Windows 7), bug fixes, repairs and full system recovery. The IT team is also able to start-up and recover individual desktops in less than a quarter of the time previously taken, enabling Kingston to devote IT resources towards innovative new projects. This VDI environment is supported by Atlantis’ virtualized storage solution, ILIO to ensure optimum performance of the virtual PCs.

“Technology is absolutely essential for both attracting students and ensuring they have the best academic experience. We strongly believe that universities have to constantly evolve their entire technology offering - from infrastructure and networking, to the applications they make available and how they are accessed - if they are going to remain competitive and meet the expectations of new and prospective students. VMware Horizon 6 allows us to give students the freedom to work from any location – whether that is on campus or at home – while still being able to access their university desktop, complete with all the applications they need for their course. With VMware Horizon, I believe Kingston University offers one of the country’s most complete and compelling access to learning environments in the UK.”

— Simon Harrison, CIO, Kingston University

Fastweb taps into new market opportunities, achieving 100% ROI within the first year while reducing the Total Cost of Ownership of Virtual Desktops with VMware Horizon Air

With revenues in excess of €1.5m and nearly two million customers, Fastweb is the largest alternative operator of fixed-line telecommunications and ICT solutions in Italy. Fastweb delivers business value added services such as cloud computing, security and converging communications to residential and business customers.

“Previously, when a customer asked for virtual desktops, we would need to set up their own physical infrastructure and configure the necessary software, which was very costly and time intensive; so much so that many SMBs could not see the financial advantage of virtual desktops. However by delivering through VMware Horizon Air we can provide desktops ‘on-demand’ with businesses only paying for what they need and when they need it. Multi-tenancy is a must for successful cloud delivery and partnering with VMware therefore became essential to achieving this.”

— Matteo Frare Barutti, ICT Solutions Architect, Fastweb

Columbia Sportswear Gets Extreme on Software-Defined Data Center Strategy

A Briefings Direct podcast on how a major sportswear company has leveraged virtualization and hybrid cloud to reap substantial business benefits.

“With our business changing and growing as quickly as it is, and with us doing business and selling directly to consumers in over a hundred countries around the world, our data centers have to be adaptable. Adarsh Credit Co-Operative Society Ltd.

Tackling rural poverty by encouraging the habit of saving with VMware vSphere

Adarsh Credit Cooperative Society launched in 1999 and has 800 branches across India. The company holds deposits totaling 3,685.41 crore in Indian Rupees (INR) and has made loans to the value of 3,816.99 crore INR, as of March, 2014. VMware vSphere Enterprise and VMware vSphere for Operations Management enables Adarsh Credit Cooperative Society to continue its mission of helping improve the social and financial status of members through savings.

“Before we moved to VMware, server utilization was typically 20 to 25 percent. Today we are maximizing our utilization rates, enabling us to scale our services without adding any more servers. Take away VMware, and we would have had to buy at least five physical boxes, therefore adding to our cost base.”

— Mr Himanshu Shah, Chief Technology Officer, Adarsh Credit Cooperative Society Ltd

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

Enhancing patient experience through technology

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi went into construction in March 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2015. The hospital’s management wanted to provide a best-in-class digital environment for all patients in order to give them the best experience possible and to ensure their stay is a comfortable as possible from every aspect.

The IT team naturally has to play a key part in this vision and, as a result, deployed vCloud Automation Center for improved managed and oversight of its infrastructure. Thanks to VMware, the time it takes to deliver applications to the hospital will be reduced from two weeks to 15 minutes – or by 70% - due to the automation capabilities of VMware’s solution.

“The key to our IT strategy when we began our journey here was starting with private cloud and growing to a hybrid cloud or a software-defined datacentre. I think that the real drivers for that were increased agility and achieving better time to market for our customers, whether that’s physicians who may need data for research, of the ability for us to rapidly upgrade and enhance products, enabling new services.”

— Mike Reagin, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

VMware’s tighter integration between product components with vRealize automation operations and the SDDC are going to allow us to have a much more hands-off approach for the care and feeding of our infrastructure.”

— Matthew Sherian, Head of Engineering, NX Systems

NX Systems

NX Systems’ journey to the Software-Defined Data Center

NX Systems discusses how it has improved the flexibility of its infrastructure to handle more transactions by using VMware vCloud Suite. The company has increased the number of transactions processed per second from two to over two hundred.

“When you have a team of four to five hundred in other companies, our department was about sixty. Obviously we had to do the economies of scale and scale it out properly. However, where before the stress of the organisation was on the IT department keeping up with the sales team’s direction, their promises, with management targets, etc. now that we are focused on the technology and we have brought it up to speed, we are lowering much of our involvement on operations and doing much more of the R&D, optimisation and re-factoring.”

— Jonathan Bowman, CTO, NX Systems

Vodafone partners with VMware to deploy Software Defined Datacenter through one of their new Hybrid Cloud offerings to their customers. Video from Keynote at VMworld Europe 2014 in Barcelona.

Vodafone is one of the world’s leading mobile communications providers. Vodafone also offers cloud and hosting services to a number of businesses from a wide range of sectors, including banking and financial services, insurance, retail and the public sector.

Vodafone aimed to create a true software-defined capability that combined private and public clouds to provide enterprise customers with a hybrid solution via its global network.

“For Vodafone, the Software-Defined Data Center is the future. Building out our private cloud according VMware’s software-defined principles has provided enormous benefits for our organisation, not only in the way we can deliver infrastructure services to customers but also in the speed at which these services can be brought to the market. We are now able to offers customers a flexible and scalable infrastructure that they can use to increase their own organisation’s agility.”

— Tom Stockwell, Head of Hosting Product Management, Vodafone Cloud and Hosting Services

Vodafone is one of the world’s leading mobile communications providers. Vodafone also offers cloud and hosting services to a number of businesses from a wide range of sectors, including banking and financial services, insurance, retail and the public sector.

Many of Vodafone’s customers were also now looking towards a hybrid approach to cloud computing, with the choice to deploy in either the public and private cloud environments and with easy movement of data and applications between the two. With this in mind Vodafone invest in vCloud Air – as it provided a hybrid cloud solution that could enable its customers to have this freedom and the associated benefits of a hybrid solution including speed of deployment of new products and services and reduced costs.

"A key challenge for adopting a hybrid cloud and also a key benefit is the requirement to move a workload from private cloud to the public cloud and back again, have workloads spanning both environments at the same time.

What appealed to us around vCloud Air was really two things: it’s based on the same hypervisor technology that is used in vSphere which enterprises will have deployed in their private cloud therefore you can do that seamless migration from private to public and back again.

In many of the public cloud offerings that exist today you actually have to export virtuial machine and transform it in order to migrate it into the target public cloud. vCloud Air takes that cost and complexity away."

— Tom Stockwell, Group Enterprise Function, Vodafone
