Shanghai Police College

Virtual SAN enables Shanghai Police College to build a high performance storage architecture

The Shanghai Police College was founded in 1949 and is the only college in Shanghai to offer full-time programs for individuals wanting to join the police force. It is also the only police academy in China to be included by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance as part of the first cohort in the Model Higher Vocational Colleges scheme.

Faced with operational management pressures and high IT costs, the Shanghai Police College embarked on a project to improve utilization of IT resources and cut down storage costs. They chose virtualization solutions from VMware, viz. vSphere and Virtual SAN, to provide hardware consolidation and rebuild their IT infrastructure. This enabled them to build a dynamic, flexible server and storage architecture, optimized for high performance, at a significantly lower TCO compared to traditional storage. Shanghai Police College have deployed several teaching and library applications along with knowledge and video databases on Virtual SAN. They plan to increase their Virtual SAN environment in the future.

“By using VMware vSphere 5.5 with Virtual SAN, we have simplified our management and operational processes while reducing costs, so we can move a steady step toward SDDC and the ‘Educational Cloud’.”

— Yu Er, Senior Engineer, IT Office of the Shanghai Police College

Columbia Sportswear is an innovative leader in the apparel and footwear space, providing products for outdoor, active lifestyles in over 100 countries around the world, through E-Com, direct-to-consumer and wholesale channels. With the mission to design and deliver authentic, outdoor, high-value products for active consumers of all ages, the company makes high-quality sportswear that keeps customers comfortable and protected, wherever their excursions take them.

“As we go forward, we are really looking for application developers to think more like operations and our operations to think more like application developers. vRealize Automation has given us that capability to have those groups as well as security and other interested parties sit side by side to collaborate and to figure out what capabilities need to be brought online. And as those capabilities have been created in templates and blueprints, they can be re-used and actually handed off to those teams to for self-provisioning and management.”

Hybrid Cloud at Columbia Sportswear

At Columbia Sportswear, you will find that one size doesn’t fit all in terms of their infrastructure. In some places where intellectual property or other concerns are really important, they will use their private cloud while for less sensitive or more commoditized, they may look at a hybrid or a public cloud offering. It’s all about matching the workflows with the right delivery and hosting mechanism for their business. VMware is really now leading not only inside your data center but helping Columbia leverage things outside where they can have cloud and scale things in and outside of their walls leveraging the tools that VMware has and that they can consistently do things whether it's in their private cloud or in a public cloud or a hybrid.

“In managing Cloud assets today, it is not really about whether they are on public or whether they are in a private Cloud or whether they’re in a hybrid Cloud, it’s about understanding and having the confidence that you can manage those assets wherever they are.”

— Tim Melvin, Director of Infrastructure, Columbia Sportswear
