Oxford University

 

Oxford University is one of the oldest universities in the world. Their Computing Service (OUCS) needed to administer a secure database-as-a-service (DBaaS) solution to manage and share research data. VMware’s Hybrid Cloud has enabled OUCS to build a DBaaS that is shared by Oxford Colleges and other research universities. Hybrid Cloud was the only solution able to overcome security restrictions on datasets which require on-premise location. Increased data protection and improved service levels have enhanced their reputation in research excellence and now proven in production, DBaaS will now be offered as a service to all major UK research universities.

As a result, SET has reduced development time for online services by 80% and doubled concurrent user capacity, helping it improve global competitiveness. Moreover, as a result of virtualization, the organizatoin has decreased data center energy consumption by 20% and data center space consumption by 60%.

To support the launch of the new 2012 Impreza, Subaru engaged marketing agency Carmichael Lynch to develop a revolutionary website to help drive their marketing campaign called firstcarstory.com it enables users to celebrate their first car experience and bring their story to life. By typing in the details, the site will automatically animate the story and provides the user with a personalised video that they could share through social media channels. A flexible rendering capacity was required to support the large numbers of visitors to their state of art real-time website. VMware Powered Service Provider Bitbrains was able to provide high performance computing nodes to help with simultaneous rendering. A hybrid cloud model based on VMware technology has provided a stable basis, within the first month the website had created over 10,000 animations. Videos are prepared and presented in less than 40 seconds.
