EPAM centralised infrastructure management in the first phase of the development process aiming at the establishment of an IT environment that would adapt more flexibly to business requirements. In the second phase of the developments in the summer of 2006, EPAM Systems decided to virtualise the development and test environments established for the projects. Thanks to VMware-based virtualisation, we are able to set up the development environment of a starting project several magnitudes faster, just under 1 hour instead of several days or weeks. The other big advantage of virtualisation is that development managers can take a snapshot of the environment before testing a new version or service pack of the software under development or before verifying the version compatibility of a new database manager. EPAM in recent years has achieved two-digit growth in revenues and employed staffs - which are also reflected in the cost of IT.
„The snapshot function of VMware provides a high degree of security for development work. Using this system, it is faster and easier to test our software and we are able to provide an even higher standard of service to our customers. While our earlier infrastructure may have limited this process, our virtualised environment has become the drive behind our business.”
MSC is a private shipping company, founded in 1970 it has grown rapidly to become the second largest shipping company in the world today. It operates 441 container ships transporting goods to customers around the world. Clal Insurance Holdings
Clal's rapid adoption of server virtualization enabled desktop virtualization that has spawned cloud and mobile computing benefits, clearly illustrating the multiplier effect of value and capabilities from such IT transformation efforts.
"We consider what we've done a private cloud. We're actually looking into ways of going into a hybrid cloud and pushing some of our systems to the public cloud in order to control the hybrid one … The plan is that by the end of next year, all of our employees could be working on VMware View. The ability to give the user the same experience on each device that he works on is priceless."
University of Óbuda, Neumann János Faculty of Information Technology
By the server and desktop side virtualisation of the educational environment, the Neumann János Faculty of IT was able to improve the efficiency of monitoring and energy consumption, therefore it is planning to continue future investments and developments in the same direction. An even higher advantage is, however, that by using virtualisation in a live environment, the teachers and students have the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge at the same time as learning theoretical studies. This includes fine tuning and optimisation of resource utilisation apart beyond the design and monitoring of virtualised environments. It is of high importance to the Neumann János Faculty of Information Technology to be able to teach state-of-the-art IT technologies not just on the theoretical level but in practice, too, because this is the precondition to provide to the students up-to-date knowledge with value on the labour market. Virtualisation occupies a distinguished place among these technologies. VMware Hungary provides all support it can in this field to the University of Óbuda in the form of professional advice, presentations and software licences.
“It is of utmost importance to us to be able to teach highly developed technologies like WMware View not only on a theoretical level but in practice, too, since this is the only way we can provide up-to-date knowledge to our students representing value on the labour market.”
