Sydney Adventist Hospital
Sydney Adventist Hospital is the largest single-campus private hospital in New South Wales. With the healthcare industry recognising client Electronic Medical Records (EMR) as a cornerstone of reforms, this hospital decided to review how it delivered systems and applications in a clinical environment. By deploying systems based on VMware Horizon View, the hospital has streamlined patient care and boosted the productivity and performance of its medical practitioners. In only two months, this leading Sydney specialist hospital transformed its processes from paper-based to paperless. In this case study and videos, a range of people, from the Head of IS to clinicians, talk about how VMware’s solutions have revolutionised the way the hospital runs. The benefits of access anywhere on any device became rapidly clear to everyone, and now the staff have full access to all patient data concurrently, and from any location and device.

"Upgrading to a virtual infrastructure has helped us considerably in maintaining and increasing meaningful use expectations, with the ability to be virtual and have the redundancy that gives, along with the fact that VMs seem to run a lot more efficiently virtually. We have better ways to collect data, a lot more uptime, and a lot more efficiency, so we can collect more data from our customers."
Times Internet Ltd
Times Internet, the digital content delivery organisation of Times India, embarked on an aggressive Private Cloud deployment to deliver an elastic, scalable and highly reactive IT infrastructure. 3 datacentres were consolidated to two, and 800 physical servers consolidated to 100 VMs, all within months. With over 30 million unique visits every month, the Times Internet cloud brings high availability to media and content distribution.
"Two of the reasons for cloud were elasticity and scale. On Times of India if there is big news, you will see traffic growth to about 200 to 300%. At that point in time, if you didn’t have elastic infrastructure, you would have trouble in scaling that operation."
KPIT Cummins is India's leading technology solutions partner for global manufacturing corporations with special focus on Automotive, Energy & Utilities, Industrial Equipments, and Semiconductor industries. The project was so successful that KPIT expanded their virtualisation project to include end-users, enabling further IT initiatives such as BYOD. In these two videos, KPIT Cummins staff discuss why and how they implemented a Private Cloud solution, and how it is contributing to the success of their business.
"We have 100% production applications running on this private cloud, 100%. All business critical applications, everything is running on the cloud infrastructure."
Laurens County Healthcare System
Laurens County Health Care System wanted to attest to Stage 1 of Meaningful Use by summer 2013 but knew it couldn’t deploy Meditech in a physical data center environment because of cost and reliability concerns.
“Physicians are very excited that they can use their own devices from anywhere to access Meditech and review EMRs [electronic medical records] and patient data without physically having to come into the hospital,”
Macquarie Universitiy's iLab is a new approach to computer laboratories, enabling students to use Windows and Macintosh applications for their university work from anywhere on most kinds of personal computers, tablets and smartphones.
ITSAM in Sweden is an public sector organisation formed to provide IT support and services to educational establishments across 6 different municipalities. One of the main challenges they faced was having the ability to operate in such a large region. If a computer went down, they would send an engineer out to fix it, this proved to be very inefficient and costly. With unique desktops you get unique problems, so ITSAM implemented VMware View so that they could easily replicate desktops to hundreds of students. This has enabled their end users to access their desktops from any location at anytime. It has also enabled teachers to easily provide additional applications to support students that need extra tuition enabling the students to work on these from home. ITSAM have recently started a proof of concept with Horizon, to enable them to manage their applications more efficiently.
“The benefit to the end users is that they can access their own desktop from any client around the world, it does n’t matter where they are. Also the school can make sure they provide the correct applications to the right students at all times.”
KGI Hong Kong
Deployed VMware technology to provide a more flexible, robust infrastructure that delivers the required system availability, scalability and performance.
“With the VMware platform, we can start new projects straight away ... we can now get new products to market 4 to 6 weeks faster.” KGI Asia
To improve operational efficiencies, Hertz International had a choice of either refreshing its existing infrastructure across its European locations at considerable expense, or implementing newer technologies. In addition to centralising the server estate, Hertz International wanted to simplify its complex desktop infrastructure, which constituted a considerable capital investment. Having over 4,000 PCs and laptops spread over 1,000 sites around Europe, upkeep and maintenance of these were real issue in terms of time, resource and cost. Following a review of the major offerings on the market, Hertz International decided to implement VMware View as it best suited the organisation’s needs and would easily integrate with its existing server virtualization infrastructure. It also made a decision to replace legacy desktop devices with zero client Wyse terminals.
“By virtualizing our server and desktop estate with VMware, we’ve cut costs, dramatically simplified our IT infrastructure and transformed how we support over 1000 desktops in our service centre in Dublin. We’re able to create and deliver even more innovative technology services to our users, while enhancing the experience we provide to our customers. The platform VMware has enabled us to build has given us extremely strong foundations to realise even greater benefits, as we add more and more services and extend the research of the programme internationally.”
ExecuJet Aviation Group
The ExecuJet Aviation Group is a global business aviation organisation, offering a diverse range of services, including aircraft sales, management and charter. ExecuJet runs four data centres in Johannesburg, Capetown, Zurich and Dubai that underpin the IT for the entire organisation. The South African data centre desperately needed to upgrade a large amount of legacy infrastructure, and the company decided to consolidate its server infrastructure using VMware. Following their successful server virtualisation project, the management team got fully behind the IT team to explore the benefits of implementing a virtual desktop infrastructure. They looked into a number of options, but due to our great experiences with VMware and the range of features on offer, they choose to implement VMware View. By using VMware View, ExecuJet employees are now able to run Windows 7 from any internet-enabled device.
“Dealing with highly discerning clients means we have to be at the cutting edge of service and innovation. Being able to use Windows 7 on tablet devices with the help of VMware View has drastically increased flexibility and improved working practices across the board - from sales executives to pilots to maintenance engineers, all of which helps us deliver the best service possible to our customers.”
EPAM centralised infrastructure management in the first phase of the development process aiming at the establishment of an IT environment that would adapt more flexibly to business requirements. In the second phase of the developments in the summer of 2006, EPAM Systems decided to virtualise the development and test environments established for the projects. Thanks to VMware-based virtualisation, we are able to set up the development environment of a starting project several magnitudes faster, just under 1 hour instead of several days or weeks. The other big advantage of virtualisation is that development managers can take a snapshot of the environment before testing a new version or service pack of the software under development or before verifying the version compatibility of a new database manager. EPAM in recent years has achieved two-digit growth in revenues and employed staffs - which are also reflected in the cost of IT.
„The snapshot function of VMware provides a high degree of security for development work. Using this system, it is faster and easier to test our software and we are able to provide an even higher standard of service to our customers. While our earlier infrastructure may have limited this process, our virtualised environment has become the drive behind our business.”
