EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne)
École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is a Federal Institute of Technology based in Lausanne in Switzerland, they have over 9,000 students and 4,500 staff members. EPFL needed to design, implement and maintain a centralized virtual infrastructure to meet the needs of the entire school. They also needed to reduce total cost of ownership and lower power consumption. vCenter Operations has transformed the way their library storage requirements are supported enabling effective predictions for capacity and a hybrid cloud model has been adopted to provide the ability to extend their infrastructure into the public cloud. As well as a 33% reduction in TCO and 80% reduction in power consumption, EPFL have also experienced increased capacity and optimization through the effective management of their cloud infrastructure.
“We invested in vCenter Operations to support our large infrastructure of 500 VMs and 40 hosts. It has enabled us to predict capacity needs and to easily locate any performance issues.”
The competence gained during the implementation of VMware vSphere and the comments we have received from our customers, have enabled Ergomedia to launch public cloud services, based on the VMware vCloud Director. Limitations in Hyper-V drove them to choose VMware to deliver a cloud for their Microsoft Applications.
“In our computing cloud, we provide customers with access to Microsoft applications, but it's VMware who helped us guarantee the top availability and stability of the entire environment. The use of the VMware virtualization software improves and accelerates our work. We do not need to employ additional administrator although the number of virtual machine keeps on growing.”
ESSEC Business School
To ensure homogeneity of a fleet composed of 1200 computers, integrate the devices of students and teachers (BYOD) and lighten the IT maintenance expenses. Virtualization of 500 workstations (soon 700 and ultimately 1500) with virtualization of applications to eliminate the conflicts. Provisioning of non-persistent environments (which eliminates profile management). Cross-device portability.
“An institution like ESSEC cannot escape the tidal wave of “Bring your Own Device!” Thanks to VMware, we were able to finally free ourselves from material constraints to offer our users access at any time, from anywhere and from all devices."

ExecuJet Aviation Group
The ExecuJet Aviation Group is a global business aviation organisation, offering a diverse range of services, including aircraft sales, management and charter. ExecuJet runs four data centres in Johannesburg, Capetown, Zurich and Dubai that underpin the IT for the entire organisation. The South African data centre desperately needed to upgrade a large amount of legacy infrastructure, and the company decided to consolidate its server infrastructure using VMware. Following their successful server virtualisation project, the management team got fully behind the IT team to explore the benefits of implementing a virtual desktop infrastructure. They looked into a number of options, but due to our great experiences with VMware and the range of features on offer, they choose to implement VMware View. By using VMware View, ExecuJet employees are now able to run Windows 7 from any internet-enabled device.
“Dealing with highly discerning clients means we have to be at the cutting edge of service and innovation. Being able to use Windows 7 on tablet devices with the help of VMware View has drastically increased flexibility and improved working practices across the board - from sales executives to pilots to maintenance engineers, all of which helps us deliver the best service possible to our customers.”

"It's critical that everyone understands at any given point and time how operations are running. Whether we have issues, and if we do have issues, what the next steps are. vCenter Operations Manager gives us that insight"
Experian demands constant innovation and nimble response to markets to maintain its profi tability and competitive edge. Its IT infrastructure team must support its developers’ eff orts to meet the business’ aggressive time-to-market requirements. A cloud-based infrastructure-as-a-service model for Experian’s test and development environments will allow developers to quickly and fl exibly self-provision IT resources when they need them. Business Impact were: Provisioning times, already slashed from weeks to days through virtualization, now further cut to minutes; Developers can more easily collaborate; business units can leverage IT builds from other lines of business; Private cloud and VMware vShield security functionality ensure IT resources are controlled
“VMware vCloud technology will allow Experian to offer an internal, selfservice cloud to our development organization, leading to faster project turnaround and better levels of IT service.”

Based on VMware vSphere, Facilicom virtualised almost all its servers, including the company-critical SAP systems. VMware offers Facilicom more control over the central server environment which supports all the operational applications.
“With VMware vSphere and vMotion it’s a lot easier to transfer or upgrade applications. Now everything happens more quickly and with less downtime. Distributing server loads is also easier. That’s really useful when deploying applications which need a lot of CPU power temporarily. We are also hardware-independent and the environment is scalable enough to keep growing.”
