Golf Course Superintendents Association (GCSAA)

Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) runs on VMware vCloud Air

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), with over 19,000 members in 72 countries, is the professional association for the men and women who manage and maintain the game’s most valuable resource — the golf course. Today, GCSAA and its members are recognized by the golf industry as one of the key contributors in elevating the game and business to its current state.

GCSAA’s mission is to serve its members, advance their profession and enhance the enjoyment, growth and vitality of the game of golf.

After deciding their IT strategy included transitioning to a Software Defined Data Center, they evaluated several vendors. They decided to go with VMware and EMC for server and storage consolidation and virtualization. They are currently 90% virtualized, with a 100% goal in the next couple of years. Currently 50% of their production applications are hosted in vCloud Air (Learning Management and Association Management apps) with a goal of 100%. These applications are important in helping GCSAA to get their customers to learn how to play golf better but also in achieving their goals of growing the business.

They also needed a cloud-based solution that would help them with international expansion rather than having to set up data centers in various countries.

"To stay competitive and to take advantage of new business opportunities, we have to be scalable but also have an environment that is reliable and redundant. And hosting our production environments in VMware vCloud Air has allowed us to grow in a rapid pace in order to fulfill the needs of our current members and our future ones.”

“The best thing that we have experienced with VMware vCloud Air is that we are able to do more with less. And what that means is that having a managed infrastructure up in VMware vCloud Air allows our engineers to basically spin up production test dev environment quickly than we would have had in our previous hosting provide.”

— Lambert Tomeldan, IT Director, GCSAA

Creative Solutions in Healthcare

Creative Solutions in Healthcare with VMware vCloud Air

Creative Solutions in Healthcare is the largest independent owner and operator of skilled nursing facilities in Texas. The company was founded in 2000 and today operates more than 49 skilled nursing and 13 assisted living facilities with a staff of 6,000 employees.

Creative Solutions in Healthcare strives everyday to enhance the quality of life for seniors in their care facilities. This extra service grants their patients the comfort in knowing that the company will go the extra mile to deliver the best possible care.

They believe that caring for the elderly is a high honor. Their resident-respect approach to caring is what continues to be the driving force in the core strategy of their company, including their focus on deploying proven, best-in-class technologies. Their love for their residents is best measured by the respect, dignity and compassion they extend daily to them.

As part of its commitment to delivering outstanding patient services, the company decided to migrate from its co-located physical environment to the cloud to save costs, improve application availability, and update its core infrastructure to comply with HIPAA requirements. After an early pilot with Microsoft Azure failed, the company turned to VMware to migrate quickly to a more robust infrastructure. Using VMware vCloud Air, Creative Solutions in Healthcare gained the technology and control to achieve HIPAA certification and improve application availability while reducing the IT budget by one-third. The company has been able to extend its capabilities to the cloud and implemented a sophisticated electronic health record (EHR) system, including electronic prescriptions and online physician orders, to improve staff agility and patient care.

"We are adaptable, we are ready, we got a very flexible infrastructure with VMware vCloud Air where if we need to motion in a new workload, we can do that more rapidly than any other vendor that we have worked with."

“That’s why we chose VMware vCloud Air as our infrastructure provider partner because we are able to focus on our interaction with our business peers and not have to mind all of the servers and all of the infrastructure and the networking. And we have partnered up with the best organization we feel in the industry to deliver that."

Learn how Rent-A-Center, a leader in the rent-to-own space in North America, uses the vRealize Suite and automation and hybrid cloud management capabilities to empower and speed infrastructure delivery to modernize their IT infrastructure and point of sale software delivery.

“Before we had these tools (vRealize Suite and NSX), it took literally dozens of people a week to get a store deployed. Just because of all the back-end changes that had to occur. With the new tools, we’re able to deploy a hundred stores a day with minimal staff.

In addition to the time savings, with the use of the infrastructure tools that come with the vCloud Suite, we have an 85% (improvement) in infrastructure utilization, in time to deploy, in disk space utilization… it’s just been a tremendous savings in every dimension.”

They not only believe high ethical standards are essential to achieving individual and corporate goals but they can also apply their core values to all their interactions with their customers, fellow employees, suppliers and subcontractors, neighbors, and stockholders.

vCloud Air represents an opportunity to create synergies between existing vSphere deployments and the investments SAIC has already made in operational procedures. For the company, the solution is familiar, less expensive and faster to deploy than other cloud service provider options—all of which leads to increased availability of services for SAIC clients and higher customer satisfaction.

The addition of VMware vCloud Government Services provided by Carpathia makes it easier to address security concerns while offering hybrid cloud services to public sector clients. SAIC sees vCloud Government Services as being almost the perfect platform for delivering enterprise IT that includes cloud but also recognizes that there’s a much broader set of services that have to be delivered in the IT portfolio.

"At SAIC, we use vCloud Air because we already have a large investment in vSphere technology. It was very straight forward for us to migrate our IT Services from our existing virtualization environment into a vCloud Air Platform. Additionally, we have a large base of trained personnel on VMWare Management technologies making it very easy for us to integrate our technology with VMWare's Cloud Service Provider offerings known as vCloud Air."

"SAIC sees vCloud Government Services as being a very viable Cloud Services Platforms for the entire US Government. It's one of the reasons we are heavily investing in becoming very technically proficient and building solutions on top of it. The Federal App Accredited Cloud Provider environment that VMWare offers provides a migration path for vSphere users today which is a large portion of our customer base that makes it straight forward to integrate with existing management solutions and to migrate workloads back and forth between that Fed App Accredited Community Cloud and their existing private side Cloud environment."

National Physician Services

IT Transformation at National Physician Services (NPS)

Founded by physicians more than 10 years ago, National Physician Services (NPS) is a national healthcare service company that provides a wide array of services to physicians, hospitals and healthcare organizations. NPS sells and supports third-party tools for practice management and electronic health records (EHR) that help physicians improve the quality of care they deliver to their patients. NPS not only provides the infrastructure to support clinical applications but also offers support, consulting, and training for its customers. NPS supports more than 100 applications on behalf of its physician users, including everything from productivity solutions such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office to clinical solutions for practice management, clinical reporting, and EHR. They no longer have to worry about adding a server or finding space on an existing one. Everything is done in the cloud, making it easier for physicians to access critical applications.

"What VMware vCloud Air allows us to do is create that seamless cutover in the event that we have a failure in our primary datacenter facility. We are looking at being able to recover in minutes as opposed to a day, several hours, or even multiple days."

“Working with VMware has been a great experience. The intellectual capital they bring and the innovation they bring as a company, it really creates that extension of NPS and it's really allowing us to transform the medical community with the infrastructure that gives them that solid base."

— Bryan Graven, CEO, National Physician Services (NPS)

Queens University of Charlotte

Queens University of Charlotte and VMware vCloud Air Disaster Recovery

What began as a small college for women in 1857 has evolved into a co-ed, comprehensive, master's-level university with a commitment to liberal arts and professional studies. Today, Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina serves approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students through its six accredited schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the McColl School of Business, the Blair College of Health (including the Presbyterian School of Nursing), the Cato School of Education, the Knight School of Communication and the Hayworth School of Graduate & Continuing Studies.

With a mission to provide a transformative educational experience and a global perspective, Queens University of Charlotte needs a platform that allows students to log in from anywhere, at any time to support its global learning and understanding initiatives—and that’s where VMware comes in.

VMware used vCloud Air to move the University’s production servers, without interruption to the domain controller for access management, ensuring Microsoft was continuously available for teachers and students to access emails. VMware vCloud Air was also used to host the University’s main website as well as a resource DNS server to be available 24/7 to alumni, prospective students, and donors.

Using vCloud Air Disaster Recovery, the University was able to host some of the apps they weren’t ready to move to the cloud like a CRM for recruiting students, fundraising servers, and other ERP systems.

“VMware vCloud Air allows us to provide anytime, anywhere service for all of our faculty, staff and students in a way that they can trust and they know that it will be available no matter where they are or no matter what’s happening with our on-campus environment.”

— Brian Baute, Chief Information Officer (CIO), Queens University of Charlotte

California Natural Resources Agency

California Natural Resource Agency (CNRA) and VMware vCloud Air

As the world’s eighth largest economy with the largest parks system and the largest water delivery system in the United States, California is more like a small country than a state. Managing California’s precious resources—from its coastlines to its parks, fish, wildlife, energy sources, and water— is the responsibility of the 30 organizations of the California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA). They depend on real-time data and system access to make decisions and respond quickly to disasters like flood, fire, drought, and earthquakes. CNRA’s mission is to restore, protect and manage the state's natural, historical and cultural resources for current and future generations. This responsibility impacts not only the people of California, but people around the world.

The goal of CNRA’s IT organization is to provide timely information and services to their departments so that they can operate at the speed of business without technology being a constraint.

CNRA is currently using VCloud Air VPC and vCloud Air Disaster Recovery as a service for their critical applications such as Fire, water, waste, etc., but also for their department tenants within their data center. They are putting out their critical tier one through three applications in the vCloud Air Disaster Recovery as a service area for protection and front-ending that with the vCloud Air offering to run their core applications.

“Our experience with VMware vCloud Air has been great. We have actually worked with some great technicians at VMware who helped us onboard the service, who helped us get everything set up and be up and running and getting the plumbing for all of our applications and test it out and make sure that it all runs fine. It’s one of those things that we found pretty painless and I would recommend it to just about anybody and any company.”

— Tony Morshed, CTO, California Natural Resource Association (CNRA)
