Lufthansa Systems

Lufthansa systems provide IT for the airline & aviation industry, based in Frankfurt, they employ over 3,000 people based in 14 countries. They needed to develop a system to distribute mapping data to pilots across the globe. Flight charts are only current for 4 weeks and pilots are only given 10 days to download updates. It needed to be scalable to cope with huge peaks in demand of up to 800MB of data being downloaded by over 7,000 pilots at the same time. A VMware Hybrid Cloud solution enables them to utilise a public cloud solution with their existing private cloud, increasing scalability & agility while ensuring data security. It was the only solution to provide the capacity to handle peaks in traffic avoiding latency issues

"VMware enables us to use the capabilities and scalabilities of a Public Cloud Provider and at the same time ensuring data security and integrity.”

— Dr. Joerg Liebe, Chief Information Officer, Lufthansa Systems

The flexibility of having both on premise VMware resources as well as VMware resources in the cloud is very powerful. And it is kind of a differentiator. And the ability to have those two sets of infrastructure in our operations and work as one is very important for us. It helps with our efficiency, our ease of deployment and our RND process."

National Physician Services

IT Transformation at National Physician Services (NPS)

Founded by physicians more than 10 years ago, National Physician Services (NPS) is a national healthcare service company that provides a wide array of services to physicians, hospitals and healthcare organizations. NPS sells and supports third-party tools for practice management and electronic health records (EHR) that help physicians improve the quality of care they deliver to their patients. NPS not only provides the infrastructure to support clinical applications but also offers support, consulting, and training for its customers. The company’s best-of-breed solutions increase efficiencies, fulfill regulatory requirements, and maximize revenue. NPS prides itself in taking a humanistic approach to healthcare information technology. The continuous improvement of medical practices is their passion, and a perfect practice engagement is the foundation for creating an efficient and effective clinical practice.

NPS worked closely with VMware to migrate its core platform—including technologies from VMware, Microsoft, and Citrix—to the VMware vCloud Air solution. The transition was seamless and completely transparent to users. vCloud Air helps NPS shorten the time required to migrate new opportunities and practices to their virtual platform. NPS supports more than 100 applications on behalf of its physician users, including everything from productivity solutions such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Office to clinical solutions for practice management, clinical reporting, and EHR. Now when an NPS customer requests a software upgrade or a new application package, NPS installs it in the cloud. They no longer have to worry about adding a server or finding space on an existing one. Everything is done in the cloud, making it easier for physicians to access critical applications.

"What VMware vCloud Air allows us to do is create that seamless cutover in the event that we have a failure in our primary datacenter facility. We are looking at being able to recover in minutes as opposed to a day, several hours, or even multiple days."

“Working with VMware has been a great experience. The intellectual capital they bring and the innovation they bring as a company, it really creates that extension of NPS and it's really allowing us to transform the medical community with the infrastructure that gives them that solid base."

— Bryan Graven, CEO, National Physician Services (NPS)

NX Systems

NX Systems’ journey to the Software-Defined Data Center

NX Systems discusses how it has improved the flexibility of its infrastructure to handle more transactions by using VMware vCloud Suite. The company has increased the number of transactions processed per second from two to over two hundred.

“When you have a team of four to five hundred in other companies, our department was about sixty. Obviously we had to do the economies of scale and scale it out properly. However, where before the stress of the organisation was on the IT department keeping up with the sales team’s direction, their promises, with management targets, etc. now that we are focused on the technology and we have brought it up to speed, we are lowering much of our involvement on operations and doing much more of the R&D, optimisation and re-factoring.”

— Jonathan Bowman, CTO, NX Systems

NX Systems

NX Systems talks about its journey with VMware so far and the solutions it is looking forward to deploying from the latest software-defined data center suite of products.

“The vSphere 6 announcement is very exciting for me – it provides two new features which we’ve been looking forward to for years – long distance vMotion and multi-core Fault Tolerance. VMware’s tighter integration between product components with vRealize automation operations and the SDDC are going to allow us to have a much more hands-off approach for the care and feeding of our infrastructure.”

— Matthew Sherian, Head of Engineering, NX Systems

Nyherji

Nyherji was looking for a way of simplifying its data centre infrastructure while being able to offer its customers a true hybrid cloud environment. Nyherji implemented VMware vSphere to virtualise its server estate, followed by VMware vCloud Suite to create an Infrastructure as a Service and hybrid cloud environment for its customers.

“VMware has enabled us to be the only managed service provider in Iceland which is able to offer our customers Infrastructure as a Service and the option of a hybrid cloud. VMware is incredibly well respected and was, in my view, the only company which we would feel comfortable partnering with. Not only does it have a strong heritage within virtualization and provisioning cloud environments, but we also feel that it offers us tremendous value for money both in terms of the ROI which we see from using these solutions and the VSPP licensing model it offers to us.”

— Helgi Björgvinsson, Solutions Architect, Nyherji

Queens University of Charlotte

Queens University of Charlotte and VMware vCloud Air

What began as a small college for women in 1857 has evolved into a co-ed, comprehensive, master's-level university with a commitment to liberal arts and professional studies. Today, Queens University of Charlotte in North Carolina serves approximately 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students through its six accredited schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the McColl School of Business, the Blair College of Health (including the Presbyterian School of Nursing), the Cato School of Education, the Knight School of Communication and the Hayworth School of Graduate & Continuing Studies.

With a mission to provide a transformative educational experience and a global perspective, Queens University of Charlotte needs a platform that allows students to log in from anywhere, at any time to support its global learning and understanding initiatives—and that’s where VMware comes in.

VMware used vCloud Air to move the University’s production servers, without interruption to the domain controller for access management, ensuring Microsoft was continuously available for teachers and students to access emails. VMware vCloud Air was also used to host the University’s main website as well as a resource DNS server to be available 24/7 to alumni, prospective students, and donors.

Using vCloud Air Disaster Recovery, the University was able to host some of the apps they weren’t ready to move to the cloud like a CRM for recruiting students, fundraising servers, and other ERP systems.

“Queens University of Charlotte is growing and changing significantly with new programs and with new methods of teaching and delivering our mission to serve rather than to be served. And we require partners’ who can help us in that mission and VMWare has been one of those partners.”

— Brian Baute, Chief Information Officer (CIO), Queens University of Charlotte

Rent-A-Center

VMware vRealize Suite Transforming IT as Rent-A-Center

Learn how Rent-A-Center, a leader in the rent-to-own space in North America, uses the vRealize Suite and automation and hybrid cloud management capabilities to empower and speed infrastructure delivery to modernize their IT infrastructure and point of sale software delivery.

“Before we had these tools (vRealize Suite and NSX), it took literally dozens of people a week to get a store deployed. Just because of all the back-end changes that had to occur. With the new tools, we’re able to deploy a hundred stores a day with minimal staff.

In addition to the time savings, with the use of the infrastructure tools that come with the vCloud Suite, we have an 85% (improvement) in infrastructure utilization, in time to deploy, in disk space utilization… it’s just been a tremendous savings in every dimension.”

— Michael Conroy, Senior Infrastructure Architect, Rent-A-Center

“So we view vCloud Air and the other products within the vCloud portfolio as a platform we can leverage to create unique and compelling solutions for our customer in the cloud space.
