Clalit Health Services

Clalit Health services virtualized their IT environment using VMware solutions

"I see VMware's SDDC revolution as an evolution for the infrastructure of the private cloud. today, all the subject of storage management, security and network is taking a lot of resources. If we are able to virtualize and automate these components, there is no doubt we could improve our savings and deliver a better service for our customers".

— Moshe Belker, Manager of 6 expert teams and 5 System and DBA teams

Clarion Solicitors

Clarion is a law firm based in Leeds in the United Kingdom. They understand what their clients want and make sure their services are tailored specifically to their requirements. Clarion are also very passionate about new, exciting products and services in the evolving IT landscape. vSphere is the foundation of Clarions growing IT infrastructure and provides them with the tools they need to meet the dynamic requirements of the business. New services and systems can now be deployed within minutes, whereas typically this would have taken several months to complete. This has given the business significant cost savings in terms of hardware maintenance, power & cooling. They also now have the capabilities of moving parts of the infrastructure easily into a private cloud which enables further resilience to the infrastructure moving forward. Next steps for the company are to use VMware Horizon Workspace to create a secure controlled environment for employees and clients to access, edit and send legal documents across the world and more importantly from any device. They will enable them to share large volumes of legal files in a highly secure manner, both internally and externally.

"Horizon workspace will give us back time. And chargeable time is essentially how lawyers make money."

— Duncan James, Infrastructure Manager

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

Enhancing patient experience through technology

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi went into construction in March 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2015. The hospital’s management wanted to provide a best-in-class digital environment for all patients in order to give them the best experience possible and to ensure their stay is a comfortable as possible from every aspect.

The IT team naturally has to play a key part in this vision and, as a result, deployed vCloud Automation Center for improved managed and oversight of its infrastructure. Thanks to VMware, the time it takes to deliver applications to the hospital will be reduced from two weeks to 15 minutes – or by 70% - due to the automation capabilities of VMware’s solution.

“The key to our IT strategy when we began our journey here was starting with private cloud and growing to a hybrid cloud or a software-defined datacentre. I think that the real drivers for that were increased agility and achieving better time to market for our customers, whether that’s physicians who may need data for research, of the ability for us to rapidly upgrade and enhance products, enabling new services.”

— Mike Reagin, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

Cloud on Demand

When cloud vendor and Hybrid Cloud enablement partner, Cloud on Demand, looked for a solution that would pave the way for its business and provide the basis for the cloud and hybrid cloud services it sought to provide customers, the company elected to invest in the VMware SDDC (software-defined data centre) as its technology of choice.

“A huge benefit for us is that we have an immediate addressable market. Using the VMware technologies we have been instantly accepted in the market, without having to now educate and court them. This also extends to the training of our reseller base, who are already comfortable with the VMware technologies,”

— Jonathan Kropf, CEO at Cloud on Demand

Clover School District

Clover School District Rejuvenates Aging Computer Labs with VMware Horizon and VMware Virtual SAN

Clover School District had all but abandoned its computer labs in favor of personal iPads and MacBook Air laptops for every student. Then the state of South Carolina announced new, mandatory Windows-based standards for online testing. Instead of a massive capital investment in new desktop PCs, the district opted for a virtual desktop environment based on the VMware Horizon® 6 platform, and a new hosting platform powered by VMware Virtual SAN™ hyperconverged storage. The results: Like-new desktop performance, a secure and compliant test environment, lower capital and operating costs, and a more resilient infrastructure.

"I am a huge fan of VSAN. Traditional SANs require a lot of babysitting, we noticed we had TBs of overprovisioned storage. With VSAN we were able to buy just what we need. We cut costs by 75% and don’t need to babysit storage anymore. System resiliency is great – VSAN allows the show to continue without disruption in case of hardware downtime."

— Matt Hoffman, Executive Director of Technology, Clover School District

Cognizant

Cognizant in India brings simplicity and agility to its IT life

Cognizant (NASDAQ: CTSH) is a leading provider of information technology, consulting, and business process outsourcing services, dedicated to helping the world’s leading companies build stronger businesses. When assessing Cognizant’s IT environment, it was clear from the results that it was growing at an unsustainable pace. The company had several data centers, packed with physical servers, storage, and networking elements. The company needed to deliver a more agile IT environment, to drive innovation and next-generation cloud services. To achieve this, Cognizant chose to partner with VMware to offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to internal customers. Post virtualization, the business has seen server utilization rates double to 80 percent, a reduction in physical server numbers, and a defined roadmap for software-defined data center adoption.

A Briefings Direct podcast on how a major sportswear company has leveraged virtualization and hybrid cloud to reap substantial business benefits.

“With our business changing and growing as quickly as it is, and with us doing business and selling directly to consumers in over a hundred countries around the world, our data centers have to be adaptable. Our data and our applications have to be secure and available, no matter where we are in the world, whether you're on network or off-premises. The SDDC has been a game-changer for us. It’s allowed to take those technologies, host them where we need them, and with whatever cost configuration makes sense, whether it’s in the cloud or on-premises, and deliver the solutions that our business needs”

— Tim Melvin, Director of Global Technology Infrastructure, Columbia Sportswear

Cork Institute of Technology

Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is a Third level college based in the south of Ireland in Cork. The challenges they were looking to address in CIT was in relation to the online delivery of cloud computing courses. VMware View allowed them to deploy virtual desktops to the students and also they choose vCloud Director Product to deploy labs to students as well. Since these students use their own vAPP; with vCloud director, the vAPPs are segregated and they are isolated from other vAPPS so they can manipulate these tools, test these tools and not affect the network surrounding.

"We have been forging industry links with VMware and we had worked quite closely with VMware in developing cloud computing academic programmes and it was through these links and through the positive experience we had with VMware products previously that we decided to choose VMware View as the desktop deployment solution and vCloud Director."

— Irene Griffin, Cloud Computing Officer, Cork Institute of Technology

After considering solutions from Microsoft and Red Hat, the organization chose to work with VMware partners HP and Systex International to design and implement a virtual infrastructure using VMware vCenter Server 5.1 to provide centralized management for VMware vSphere 5.1 Enterprise Plus and high availability through vSphere vMotion.

"Through VMware we have achieved 80 percent utilization of server resources. This means we can run significantly more server resources without increasing energy consumption."

— Joseph Chung, Head of Infrastructure

Datacentrix

Partner testimonial as to how effectively the VOA assesments tool worked for their customers, providing quantifiable results on how much it has saved its customers.

Some typical feedback we got was that the customers saw that the SQL DBA insists on more memory, whereas VOA clearly indicated that they are not even using a quarter of that memory. It quickly highlighted to us what the root cause of performance problems were.

— Jay Dempsey & Marius Redelinghuis, , Solutions Architect

Diákhitel Központ Zrt.

Student Loan Direct is an easy-to-use, user-friendly portal that also provides help and information functions. It enables users to create correct and properly completed documents required for the loan process. They can complete their loan applications and data update forms, view their loan agreements, balances, and repayment history, exchange messages with the Student Loan Center, and communicate using this channel instead of postal mail. The launch of the Student Loan Direct is a success story: 50 percent of all new loan applications already arrived through the portal started in September 2011. Since the virtualization of Student Loan Center, there were no unplanned server downtimes, and the server room requires less cooling and energy. The fault tolerance of the VMware-based environment, tested before implementing the Student Loan Direct portal, showed that operation continuity can be ensured if combined with regular data backups. The introduction of 7x24 service availability requires setting up a backup data center that Student Loan Center will implement using VMware’s disaster recovery solution.

"Using VMware's virtualization solution, we have set up a server environment with high-availability and load balancing to serve our Student Loan Direct portal. So our customers can rely on our services around the clock, 7 days a week."

— István Gál, IT Manager, Student Loan Center Plc.

EPAM Systems

EPAM centralised infrastructure management in the first phase of the development process aiming at the establishment of an IT environment that would adapt more flexibly to business requirements. In the second phase of the developments in the summer of 2006, EPAM Systems decided to virtualise the development and test environments established for the projects. Thanks to VMware-based virtualisation, we are able to set up the development environment of a starting project several magnitudes faster, just under 1 hour instead of several days or weeks. The other big advantage of virtualisation is that development managers can take a snapshot of the environment before testing a new version or service pack of the software under development or before verifying the version compatibility of a new database manager. EPAM in recent years has achieved two-digit growth in revenues and employed staffs - which are also reflected in the cost of IT.

„The snapshot function of VMware provides a high degree of security for development work. Using this system, it is faster and easier to test our software and we are able to provide an even higher standard of service to our customers. While our earlier infrastructure may have limited this process, our virtualised environment has become the drive behind our business.”

— Tibor Borzák, IT research & development manager, EPAM Systems
