ITSAM in Sweden is an public sector organisation formed to provide IT support and services to educational establishments across 6 different municipalities. One of the main challenges they faced was having the ability to operate in such a large region. If a computer went down, they would send an engineer out to fix it, this proved to be very inefficient and costly. With unique desktops you get unique problems, so ITSAM implemented VMware View so that they could easily replicate desktops to hundreds of students. This has enabled their end users to access their desktops from any location at anytime. It has also enabled teachers to easily provide additional applications to support students that need extra tuition enabling the students to work on these from home. ITSAM have recently started a proof of concept with Horizon, to enable them to manage their applications more efficiently.
“The benefit to the end users is that they can access their own desktop from any client around the world, it does n’t matter where they are. Also the school can make sure they provide the correct applications to the right students at all times.”

And that means making sure that our internal service providers can maintain operational readiness even during a disaster. We contract with SunGard to provide our IT staff with 250 offsite PCs in the case of a disaster. The hardware independence of VMware ACE gives our users seamless access to their specific ‘Kindred tool set,’ regardless of the x86 hardware SunGard provides us. Knowing our staff will be able to keep Kindred Healthcare doing business as usual, using their same day-to-day computing environment, is an enormous benefit.”
