Cork Institute of Technology

Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is a Third level college based in the south of Ireland in Cork. The challenges they were looking to address in CIT was in relation to the online delivery of cloud computing courses. VMware View allowed them to deploy virtual desktops to the students and also they choose vCloud Director Product to deploy labs to students as well. Since these students use their own vAPP; with vCloud director, the vAPPs are segregated and they are isolated from other vAPPS so they can manipulate these tools, test these tools and not affect the network surrounding.

"We have been forging industry links with VMware and we had worked quite closely with VMware in developing cloud computing academic programmes and it was through these links and through the positive experience we had with VMware products previously that we decided to choose VMware View as the desktop deployment solution and vCloud Director."

— Irene Griffin, Cloud Computing Officer, Cork Institute of Technology

Cornerstone Community Bank

Cornerstone Community Bank chose VMware for its server virtualization and need for High Availability. Since using VMware the bank has experienced cost reduction in the purchase and maintenance of physical servers, and has implemented a disaster recovery plan that can be tailored to meet the ease-of-use but also scalability needs of a small IT staff.

“VMware is critical to our disaster recovery. It saves us many, many hours. At my previous place of employment, it took us about 12 to 14 hours to get a domain controller up in a disaster recovery test. With VMware, we're able to stand up our domain controller in about 4 hours.”

— Randy Dover, VP & Information Technology Officer

Corporate Express

VMware virtualization has allowed Corporate Express to improve the agility and flexibility of its IT systems, and align its technology closely with business needs. It has also provided a powerful reference for customers of its external IT service delivery business unit.

“We have built an agile, dynamic infrastructure platform that supports our IT team’s strategic approach to managing requests from our business units. We don’t have to go back and re-architect an environment every time because everything is virtualized.”

— Andrew Grech, Infrastructure and Operations Manager

DaiWa Capital Markets Hong Kong Limited

Daiwa Capital Markets Hong Kong had rapidly expanded its datacenter to host more than 500 physical servers, which was becoming increasingly difficult to manage. The company wanted to ensure high availability of its financial services applications and deliver a disaster recovery solution that would eliminate downtime. After considering solutions from Microsoft® and Red Hat®, the organization chose to work with VMware® partners HP® and Systex International® to design and implement a virtual infrastructure using VMware vCenter Server™ 5.1 to provide centralized management for VMware vSphere® 5.1 Enterprise Plus and high availability through vSphere vMotion®.

"Through VMware we have achieved 80 percent utilization of server resources. This means we can run significantly more server resources without increasing energy consumption."

— Joseph Chung, Head of Infrastructure

— Dr. Frank Seyl, Business Excellence, MNC Sales and Service Deutsche Telekom MNC

Deutsche Telekom AG Commundo Tagungshotels

Challenges: Rollout for 50 PC seminar rooms with 132 desktops each at 8 hotel locations. Deployment of business-critical applications and software from a wide range of environments. Increasing demands on IT in provisioning the technical infrastructure. High security requirements. Observance of corporate compliance policies. Reduction in time, personnel and hardware costs. Increase flexibility for IT staff. Solution: Desktop virtualization with VMware View. Fat client desktops will be replaced with zero clients by June 30, 2012. VPN infrastructure will remain intact. Results: Time required for desktop deployment reduced by 84 percent. Installation time per seminar cut from 90 minutes to 10. Application and software rollout centralized and simplified. Standardized desktop environment.

"We no longer have to rely on on-site support from outside IT providers when performing rollouts. Using virtualized desktops, we can deploy applications and software packages from various environments very quickly from a central location. This has enabled us to significantly reduce our personnel costs."

— Jürgen Daust, Director Quality, Personnel, IV & IT, Commundo Tagungshotels, Deutsche Telekom AG

Diákhitel Központ Zrt.

Student Loan Direct is an easy-to-use, user-friendly portal that also provides help and information functions. It enables users to create correct and properly completed documents required for the loan process. They can complete their loan applications and data update forms, view their loan agreements, balances, and repayment history, exchange messages with the Student Loan Center, and communicate using this channel instead of postal mail. The launch of the Student Loan Direct is a success story: 50 percent of all new loan applications already arrived through the portal started in September 2011. Since the virtualization of Student Loan Center, there were no unplanned server downtimes, and the server room requires less cooling and energy. The fault tolerance of the VMware-based environment, tested before implementing the Student Loan Direct portal, showed that operation continuity can be ensured if combined with regular data backups. The introduction of 7x24 service availability requires setting up a backup data center that Student Loan Center will implement using VMware’s disaster recovery solution.

"Using VMware's virtualization solution, we have set up a server environment with high-availability and load balancing to serve our Student Loan Direct portal. So our customers can rely on our services around the clock, 7 days a week."

— István Gál, IT Manager, Student Loan Center Plc.

Digiweb

VMware virtualization enabled Digiweb to ensure business continuity and recovery across its own infrastructure and virtualize customer environments so operations could continue following the earthquakes in Christchurch.

“Deploying VMware enabled us to provide robust, resilient hosting services to our customers and help them ensure business continuity following the devastating earthquakes of late 2010 and early 2011.”

— Adrian Grant, Managing Director

Diocese of Lafayette

Desktop virtualization with VMware View eases deployment of new software at Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette. Virtualization enables cost-conscious Diocese to support 500 end users with just two IT staffers.

“I never dreamed just two of us could handle 500 end users dispersed through a wide geographic area. We can do it thanks to desktop virtualization with VMware View.”

— Rob Stevenson, CIO

Dorado

Dorado Strengthens Customer Confidence in SaaS with VMware vFabric Hyperic

“Availability has gone up two-tenths of a percent – from 99.6% to 99.8% – over the last 12 months, which is when Hyperic was implemented.”

— Rob Carpenter, PhD, Chief Technology Officer

Dr Reddy's Laboratories

VMware virtualization enables the organization to cut management overheads and reduce the time and effort required to customize the SAP system to meet specific business requirements.

“VMware virtualization has enabled us to deliver our business-critical SAP applications reliably and at a low cost, while the ability to roll back to an operational ‘snapshot’ of a virtual server has reduced our development times and increased our responsiveness to the business.”

— P.R. Srivanas, Senior Manager, SAP Basis

Dreher Sörgyárak Zrt.

Dreher used VMware ESX 3.5 to virtualize its server environment, and now upgrades it to vSphere 4.1 Version The benefits from the flexibility of the VMware environment have a noticeable effect on the performance of every day operation tasks: for example, using vMotion they can easily reshuffle the virtual machines between the hosts, and literally the business department does not even notice if any of the physical machines is shut down for maintenance. With VMware tools, 70 to 80 percent of the operation tasks can be managed in-house, with unchanged staff numbers, which leads to significant cost savings. Since 2009 Dreher Sörgyárak Zrt. switched to 24-hour operation, for which the continuous availability too was easier to maintain by using a VMware based server environment.

"Compared to our former costs of operation, the total cost of our virtualization project including the price of the new hardware and the license fees, was recovered in 18 months.".

— Ferenc Schüszterl, IT Services Manager, Dreher Sörgyárak Zrt.
