Oxford University

Oxford University is one of the oldest universities in the world. Their Computing Service (OUCS) needed to administer a secure database-as-a-service (DBaaS) solution to manage and share research data. VMware’s Hybrid Cloud has enabled OUCS to build a DBaaS that is shared by Oxford Colleges and other research universities. Hybrid Cloud was the only solution able to overcome security restrictions on datasets which require on-premise location. Increased data protection and improved service levels have enhanced their reputation in research excellence and now proven in production, DBaaS will now be offered as a service to all major UK research universities.

“Access to information is critical to maintain our position as the world’s top university and we needed a flexible, scalable infrastructure. After doing our own research, we decided a Hybrid Cloud as best suited to our requirements. The vCloud datacentre service combined with Colt’s pedigree in information delivery, was the natural choice for us.”

— Dr Stuart Lee, Director of IT, University of Oxford

Servier Hungária Kft.

Az üzleti igények gyorsabb és rugalmasabb kiszolgálása, a szerverkörnyezet költséghatékonyabb működtetése, a hardver- és szoftverberuházási költségek csökkentése érdekében a Servier Hungária IT-menedzsere 2009-ben szervervirtualizációs és -konszolidációs projekt megvalósítását javasolta, amelyet a cég vezetői, az elérhető előnyöket értékelve, jóváhagytak.A VMware alapú virtualizált szerverkörnyezetben a Servier Hungária IT-csapata összehasonlíthatatlanul jobban gazdálkodhat az erőforrásokkal, dinamikusan és rugalmasan oszthatja el a terhelést, és a karbantartást is elvégezheti munkaidőben, a szolgáltatások szüneteltetése nélkül.

“Our VMware based virtual server environment is not just more flexible and cost-effective, but also a lot more reliable and stable than an infrastructure built on dedicated servers. For users who are not familiar with the concept of virtualization, this may sound like a contradition at first, but practice has clearly delivered proof of its viability.”

— Viktor Márton, IT Manager, Servier Hungária Kft.

Hungarian National Bank (Magyar Nemzeti Bank)

Az MNB szervervirtualizációs projektje a VMware ESX Server 3.5-ös verziójával indult, de a platform legújabb, 4.0-s verzióra történő frissítése a HP-val kötött support szerződésnek is része. A virtualizált szerverek felügyeletére a jegybank a VMware vCenter megoldását vezette be. Az MNB a hardvererőforrások átlagosan 70 százalékos kihasználását tűzte ki célul, ami a projekt eredményeként a gyakorlatban megvalósult. A jegybank a VMware virtualizációs megoldásával ötödére csökkentette a szervergépek számát, amivel arányosan csökkent a kiszolgálók hely- és a hűtésigénye is.

“Due to the extra importance of the national bank’s role, a virtualisation solution already well-proven in the market and providing high standards of support and having adequate references in Hungary could be considered only. VMware’s virtualisation technology met these strict requirements.”

— Gyula Pap, IT Director, Hungarian National Bank
