Somerset School District

K-12 education has changed dramatically in recent years. According to Sara Eichten, principal at Somerset Middle School in Wisconsin, “The Common Core State Standards have drastically changed what we need to be doing with our students in both English language arts and mathematics, as well as focusing on disciplinary literacy in science, social studies, and other related arts classes.” So in May 2013 when Somerset School District was selected to participate in a pilot program to test the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) platform to meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, it looked to VMware for help. VMware® Horizon View™ helped ease the deployment of the rigorous testing platform and deliver a seamless user experience to students.

"With VMware Horizon View, we didn’t experience any technical issues when we did the [Smarter Balanced] pilot. People were concerned about audio sound quality, videos, mouse movements—those things that are critical in high-stakes testing—but we saw no performance issues whatsoever in our environment. The virtual environment performed the way we expected it to, and we’re very happy with the results.”

— Ryan Sicard, Director of IT, Somerset School District

St Edmund’s College

St Edmund’s College needed to increase the efficiency and reliability of its IT estate, while enabling a new BYOD solution for pupils and teachers within the school. Using VMware software, the school has virtualized 95% of its servers and 70% of its desktop PCs, providing a new, central platform for managing IT.

“We’re really excited by what VMware’s technology has brought to St Edmund’s College. By giving pupils the opportunity to use their own devices, the children have become much more engaged within lessons and are able to experience new ways of working. Being able to access the school network from home or within the boarding houses is also allowing them to become more efficient and independent learners. Alongside this, we’ve also seen some significant cost and environmental savings for the school through increased energy efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.”

— Paulo Durán, Headmaster, St Edmund’s College

Times Internet Ltd

Times Internet, the digital content delivery organisation of Times India, embarked on an aggressive Private Cloud deployment to deliver an elastic, scalable and highly reactive IT infrastructure. 3 datacentres were consolidated to two, and 800 physical servers consolidated to 100 VMs, all within months. With over 30 million unique visits every month, the Times Internet cloud brings high availability to media and content distribution.

"Two of the reasons for cloud were elasticity and scale. On Times of India if there is big news, you will see traffic growth to about 200 to 300%. At that point in time, if you didn’t have elastic infrastructure, you would have trouble in scaling that operation."

— Gautam Sinha, Chief Operating Officer & CTO
