Baystate Health

VMware Hyper-Converged technology Helps Baystate Health Provide a Higher Level of Care While Cutting IT Expenses

Baystate Health, one of the leading healthcare providers in the nation, must evolve continuously to offer the highest-quality care. To support this mission, Baystate embarked on an update of its entire IT infrastructure in 2014. It turned to VMware technology, specifically vSphere, Virtual SAN, NSX and Horizon to design and build a new virtualized data center, and to deploy 10,000 virtual desktops to allow clinicians and administrative personnel to access the corporate network while on the go.

“Based on the requirements of up-time, integration of all the different siloes and essentially the seamlessness of the architecture, VMware is, as far as we’re concerned, the proper choice – pretty much the most solid approach to hyperconvergence.”

— Mike Feld, Interim CTO, Baystate Health

Designer Pages

Designer Pages and VMware vCloud Air

Designer Pages was conceived in 2007 with a crude napkin sketch and a lofty vision to reshape the way the architecture and design industries do business. They build tools that help designers find great products and connect with the manufacturers that make them. Designer Pages is located in New York City, which is the largest design market in the world and it’s the hub of all architects and designers. Being located in New York has made it easier for customers to access their solutions.

Having seen the problem with large firms in New York City that were struggling enormously with information management, specifically around products being selected for buildings, Designer Pages decided to deliver for these design firms by providing a product selection and specification platform that would serve as knowledge portal for firms so that every single product selection was accessible indefinitely.

Designer Pages is currently using VMware vCloud Air to host their main company’s website – customer facing as well as other app servers such as load balancer and SQL.

"We wanted to focus on building something that would be valuable for our customers. We did not want to focus our time dealing with technical infrastructure that we knew we would be able to scale ourselves. We decided to move our software to VMware because we knew it would ultimately make us a better business."

— Jacob Slevin, CEO/Co – Founder, Designer Pages

OGL Computer Services

OGL Computer Uses VMware App Volumes Solution to Grow Services and Save Costs in Citrix Environment

Small to medium-size enterprises in the United Kingdom rely on OGL Computer for a range of cloud services, on-premises solutions, and IT support. But OGL’s launch of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) services was stymied by the overhead of its Citrix solution and the limited functionality of other VDI delivery technologies. By implementing the VMware App Volumes™ application management solution, OGL built a multitenant VDI environment that delivers an extensive range of applications to customers in real time, with full application functionality on any device. It also reduces OpEx and CapEx.

“A really big thing for us is that App Volumes gives all applications 100 percent functionality, just as if they were installed natively to the underlying OS. App Volumes delivers huge advantages in provisioning, ongoing support, and customer satisfaction.”

— Mark Slater, Technical Architect, OGL Computer Services

Clover School District

Clover School District Rejuvenates Aging Computer Labs with VMware Horizon and VMware Virtual SAN

Clover School District had all but abandoned its computer labs in favor of personal iPads and MacBook Air laptops for every student. Then the state of South Carolina announced new, mandatory Windows-based standards for online testing. Instead of a massive capital investment in new desktop PCs, the district opted for a virtual desktop environment based on the VMware Horizon® 6 platform, and a new hosting platform powered by VMware Virtual SAN™ hyperconverged storage. The results: Like-new desktop performance, a secure and compliant test environment, lower capital and operating costs, and a more resilient infrastructure.

"I am a huge fan of VSAN. Traditional SANs require a lot of babysitting, we noticed we had TBs of overprovisioned storage. With VSAN we were able to buy just what we need. We cut costs by 75% and don’t need to babysit storage anymore. System resiliency is great – VSAN allows the show to continue without disruption in case of hardware downtime."

— Matt Hoffman, Executive Director of Technology, Clover School District

Women's College Hospital

Women's College Hospital Gives Caregivers Fast, Reliable Clinical Information with EpicCare Ambulatory EMR and a VMware Private Cloud and VDI

Women's College Hospital was building a medical center to pioneer new ambulatory treatment practices. It needed an IT environment to make clinical information and systems easily accessible to caregivers. By launching a new EpicCare electronic medical records (EMR) solution on a VMware private cloud and delivering it to users through a VMware Horizon® 6 Standard Edition virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), the hospital cut data delivery times for clinicians and enabled its lean IT team to easily manage the environment.

"If your virtual infrastructure isn't rock solid, you're going to spend cycles trying to fix it. But that's the last thing on my mind with this environment. It is rock solid."

— Brendan Kwolek, IT Director, Women's College Hospital

City Clinic Bulgaria

City Clinic taps VDI technology to save lives and cut costs

City Clinic implements an innovative cloud-based mobile telemedicine solution combining state-of-the-art medical instrumentation and proven virtual desktop technology from VMware to expand the reach and lower the cost of medical examination. Applications include disaster response, prevention programs, chronic condition monitoring, distributed first-contact care, home care and many more. City Clinic blazes the trail for both private and public healthcare organizations, gaining the ability to provide high quality care to more people, faster and cheaper – all at the same time – and with existing human resources.

“We were not interested in integrating many single-purpose, often proprietary solutions. Rather, we wanted to see an open platform enabling us to perform a multitude of medical examination procedures as well as tests remotely. That essentially meant having one solution integrating many medical instruments. We also stressed the need to tightly integrate remote examination with centralized, standards-based Electronic Medical Record systems. Without such integration, the solution would not be much of an improvement for our doctors’ productivity.”

— Ilian Grigorov, Chief Executive Officer, City Clinic

OSIS

Perfect Health: OSIS Provides 100 Percent Uptime for Its Healthcare Clients with VMware

OSIS cannot tolerate downtime. Community health centers rely on OSIS to host their healthcare applications, and if those are unavailable, patient care will suffer. After struggling with outages for years on the Microsoft Hyper-V platform, OSIS migrated to VMware vSphere with Operations Management and achieved 100 percent uptime of IT systems.

“We had bad experiences with Hyper-V. Practically my first day on the job, one of my first questions was, ‘Why don’t we have VMware?'"

"Moving to VMware has freed up a lot of time for the entire team.”

— Rob Frilling, Infrastructure Team Lead and Senior Virtualization Engineer

Agropur Ingredients

Agropur Ingredients Improves Performance and Reduces Downtime by Deploying VMware Virtual SAN Solution

Agropur Ingredients operates a network of plants to make cheese and other ingredients for food-industry customers. Each plant operates its own data center to ensure that cheese and ingredient making continue around the clock. When an aging and out-of-capacity physical storage solution began to slow operations and hinder system maintenance, the company turned to the VMware Virtual SAN™ solution. The result: more capacity for less cost and improved system and application performance.

“In the past, we had no ability to add storage or scale to meet our growing needs. Today with Virtual SAN, I can add more disk on the fly without even thinking about it, and memory upgrades have become a breeze.”

— Caleb Holmstrom, Network Administrator, Agropur Ingredients

The Jockey Club

The Jockey Club details how, by working with VMware vCAN partner Carrenza, it has used vCloud Air to help it manage variable workloads, disaster recovery and back office IT.

“We have a need to provide Disaster Recovery services cost-effectively, and we don’t feel it’s appropriate for the partner to be delivering those services to us without relying on what we know is a great infrastructure that sits behind it, which is delivered by VMware.”

“Using VMware’s public cloud enables us to manage the unpredictable.”

— David Dommet, Group IS Director, The Jockey Club

Nexinto

Nexinto discusses its role as a premium vCAN partner, and how it uses VMware solutions to enable customers to keep their business operations running at all times.

“For Nexinto customers, it’s key that the business is always on, as every minute the customer is not available, they are losing a lot of money. So the vCAN program is providing us with the opportunity to cover such challenges without investing in fixed platforms, and gives us the capability of an excellent OPEX model.”

“We offer our own financial services, but are also offering our own platform-as-a-service. So having vSAN looking at NSX and getting the automation portal together is helping us to bring up [our platform] in different locations, so even when customers out of the blue tell us they want our platform in a PCI environment, we use all the bits and pieces coming from the product to actually give them an environment that is fully controlled and still monitored by us.”

— Andre Neumann, Head of Supplier Management, Nexinto

Telefonica Spain

Telefónica discusses how vCloud Air Network has enabled its Cloud Services targeted at large enterprise to provide customers with the flexibility and control to scale up their applications in the public or private cloud, depending on their needs, and use of its disaster recovery capabilities

“With our virtual data centre, we have moved all the functionality we used to provide as a hosting provider to the cloud. What previously used to be complex projects can now be self-provisioned by the customer. With an active-passive environment, you can have an automated and predictable Disaster Recovery with refined point objectives of ten minutes, and recovery times of less than an hour.”

“As VMware has such a strong presence in customer data centres, for us it was very clear that having a service based in VMware [technology] would give customers a lot of confidence when moving their applications to the cloud.”

— Antonio Oriol, Global CMO, Cloud Services, Telefónica
