Inaugural VMware New Way of Life Reveals Indonesians Prefer Using Own Technology for Work

Always-on, always-mobile and always-connected generation enjoys greater job satisfaction, productivity and efficiency when using own technology at work

Results call for organizations to provide greater support and flexibility for mobile workers

JAKARTA, 26 February 2013 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced the results of the VMware New Way of Life 2013 study which examines the evolving work-style and life-style preferences of technology users in a post PC era.

Conducted for the first time in Indonesia, the study revealed that younger employees are driving changing patterns of technology usage in the workplace, with 67% of those responding to the study classified as millennials or those under the age of 34.

“We are experiencing a technology revolution that is being dictated by the demands of an increasingly young, connected, and vibrant Indonesian society,” said Andreas Kagawa, country manager, VMware Indonesia. “This New Way of Life holds positive productivity implications for employers that adopt more flexible IT policies, but also brings with it very real concerns around ensuring corporate data security and compliance as well.”

The New Way of Life study was commissioned by VMware and conducted by Acorn Research.  It surveyed over 2,100 people in 12 countries across Asia-Pacific, including 150 responses from Indonesia in 2013.

Employees More Productive When Left to their Own Devices

With 90% of respondents owning two or more of these personal devices, Indonesia ranked second behind only China (94%) in terms of employee connectedness. In fact, 93% of Indonesian respondents say they bring their personal devices to work and use them for their jobs.

Consequently, when using the technology of their choice to work:

  • 80% say they are faster to respond to change;
  • 78% say they can work more efficiently when not in the office; and
  • 73% say they are more efficient in complete work tasks.

Work and personal lives are also blurring with 73% of respondents spending time working at home.

The 2013 study also identified a strong link between IT freedom and job satisfaction. One in two Indonesian respondents (52%) say they value technological mobility in their role, and 63% say they prefer to work for a company that is open to their choice of software and devices.

“The recent floods that swept Jakarta are a great example of the need to equip and enable employees to work even when outside the office. If companies can safely deliver the applications that employees need to do their work on their choice of personal device, imagine the positive impact it could have on the organization’s bottom-line and employee satisfaction,” said Kagawa.

IT Struggling to Catch-up with Employees

Although the majority of end users in Indonesia surveyed (96%) say their IT departments are aware that they are using their own technologies to accomplish their work, 86% say their company's IT policies restrict them from connecting their personal device to the corporate network.

Nevertheless, one in two respondents (57%) continue to bring and use their personal device for work despite a lack of support from IT.  In fact, nearly seven in ten (69%) say they find their own workarounds or turn to Google for answers (70%) on how to better integrate their personal devices into corporate IT infrastructures.

“I speak to CIOs and IT decision makers daily who say managing the challenges that arise from the influx of personal devices into the workplace can no longer be neglected. That is why VMware is delivering the cloud solutions to empower organizations and IT to meet end-user demands in this new way of life,” added Kagawa.

In a separate announcement today, VMware unveiled the VMware Horizon Suite, designed to be the industry’s most comprehensive platform for workforce mobility.  The suite, consisting of VMware Horizon Workspace, VMware Horizon View and VMware Horizon Mirage promises to simplify end-user computing and empowers workforce mobility that connects end-users to their data, applications and desktops on any device without sacrificing IT security and control.
