WHY USING NUKE?
During a computer sciences formation, there is a lot of various things a student learns. From the basics of an Unix environment to the programmation in various languages, everything needed in your formation is usually provided by schools/universities.
But when you have to work on long projects or to review some of the manipulations made, you don't always have the possibility to use your school's machines or to connect to your university server.
During such moments, you may think of a double-boot Linux install on top of your base system on your home computer, but you don't have the time to do this and may not have an internet access to download the needed tools.
That's why Nuke exists.
Using Nuke with VMWare provides you all the tools needed for your learning/development projects without any long and boring installation process. Everything comes out-of-the box. Just download it and run it.
And I know well all the needs of students because I'm a student, and some time ago I would have loved to see something like this. That's why I made this very eye-candy Ubuntu box (because when you have to pass hours behind your screen you may want to work on a nice-looking system ;-)
Enjoy it!
NUKE HISTORY
I wanted Nuke to be a very easy-to-use Linux system but with a strong and supported basis, that's why I chose the Ubuntu distribution for Nuke, because it is an user-oriented distribution with a solid Debian base and software support.
Then, I removed all the unecessary packages such as multimedia players and the OpenOffice.org suite because such software are usually installed on your home computer and you may not need a copy on you virtual development machine. This saved a lot of space which I used to install the most used compilers and development tools.
After that, I searched a lot for the "perfect theme", then I made a custom combination of themes I found on the net, and fine-tuned it with a custom version of the Clearlook Gnome theme.
I finally installed the VMWare tools, before doing a lot of testing and adding/removing packages to get the best size/features ratio.
When Nuke was ready, I wanted to share it with everyone and I hope that it will be useful to some other people, and especially students like me.
LICENSE
Nuke is based on the Ubuntu Linux distribution (http://ubuntu.com).
