Description:
-- What does this appliance do? --
The Web Developer Appliance is a virtual machine that supplies the end user with a fully configured and prepared web development platform. In essence, what this gives you is a web server, a choice of database backends, support for numerous popular web programming languages, numerous web-browsers to test your finished web application in (within a safe environment), and tools to help you fix any problems that you may find.
-- How was this appliance built? --
This appliance was built using the current stable release of Ubuntu Linux - version 5.10, the Breezy Badger release. Additional components set-up on top of this distribution are some of the most common web-server configurations found on the internet today:
* the Apache2 web server - configured with PHP4, mod_perl, FastCGI, mod_rewrite to name a few things prepared for you
* MySQL 4.1 - (inc. admin tools such as phpMyAdmin)
* PostgreSQL 8.1 - (inc. admin tools such as phpPgAdmin)
Also included in the set-up is Ruby on Rails (v1.1), a web-development framework that has been getting a lot of attention on the internet recently.
Finally, you will also find a plethora of other useful tools to help you on your web development task - code editors, graphics editors, and lots and lots of web browsers to test things on.
-- How do I get started? --
Once you have downloaded and started the virtual machine, you shall be logged straight into the desktop. From here you shall find a rather large icon labelled "Start Here". This will take you to the start page and instructions for the appliance.
Also on the desktop, you shall find folders with lanchers for the most useful applications all ready for you, so that you don't have to search the menu to find what you are looking for. You will also find control scripts for the web server and databases - if you get any problems with the system (i.e. web server or database lockups), just double-click on these scripts and they will reboot the systems for you - there's no need to learn any linux command line here.
Finally, on the desktop you shall also find a folder called "htdocs". This is a link directly to the Apache web-server document root. Place all of your files here and they shall be ready for the web server to start serving them up!
-- That's the lot! We hope you find this appliance useful! --
