EtherDora the Network Explorer

Ready to go Ethereal installation on Fedora Core 5, with common network tools such as nmap, tftpd, etc.

Description

1. This appliance is designed as a network professional's quick VM tool for resolving network problems, even if they're unfamiliar with loading, obtaining distributions, Linux in general, etc. It's already configured and a set of common tools for a network professional are available and loaded, such as Ethereal, tftpd, web browser bookmarks to subnet calculator websites, and many other common network tools which some normally require searching, saving, installation, configuration, and other time consuming setup requirements all with large learning curves.

My own work provided laptop is locked down, however vmware is installed so I can load this VM appliance onto my locked down Windows laptop and start using the Linux-based protocol anaylzer immediately, by simply clicking the Ethereal icon sitting on the desktop.

The PRIMARY component is Ethereal - The world's most popular network protocol analyzer. Ethereal is used by network professionals around the world for troubleshooting, analysis, software and protocol development, and education. It has all of the standard features you would expect in a protocol analyzer, and several features not seen in any other product. Its open source license allows talented experts in the networking community to add enhancements.

2. The biggest step involved in building the appliance was applying my background as a network engineer within large corporations, interviewing many other network engineers to find what tools they feel are most useful, and then applying my Linux skills and knowledge of VMware configurations to determine the small memory size, diskspace, choice of packages, installation of Fedora, nmap, Ethereal, etc.

The CD drive is in "auto" mode so it will work with other systems, the disk partitions in Fedora were optimized with LVM to allow for larger or smaller drive size, depending on the user's requirements and my favorite web links for network calculations were added.

3. The steps are:
- First unzip / untar the files: tar zxvf EtherDora.tar.gz
- Within VMware, Open Existing Virtual Machine
- Browse to location the two files were unzipped
- Start the VM by powering it on
- Click the Ethereal icon on the desktop after logging in

4. All components are OpenSource files only.
