Description:
I believe the world of virtual servers and PC’s need to be opened up to the everyday computer user. This appliance is to introduce the common computer gamer to the world virtual servers. Why? Because there are many millions more of them, then IT & corporate users. This server is upgradable, fast and flexible for the novice user. A very important traits, when it comes to the novice, intermediate and advanced users of the world. I wanted this so anyone can use it.
This appliance was built with the basic download of DSL version 2.2b & later versions. Damn Small Linux is used mainly because it is very powerful. Out of the box DSL is a platform that allows many more hardware combinations than any other I have worked with. All software, scripts, configurations are available on the Internet for configuring DSL. I have brought it together in an easy to use package that includes the Call of Duty 2 Linux port Server by Ryan C. Gordon (with permission). Put a good user interface, configuration and help base together to expedite the deployment of a game server. I currently have a Call of Duty 1, Call of Duty United Offensive, America’s Army and Battle Field 1942 Servers in testing for future release. Once I learn how this one did, I will decide on the release of the others. Future releases will allow several servers to be run on the same VM appliance.
When creating a gaming server, the problem for many people is getting the game server configured and running within a reasonable period of time. This VM, when started with the "Call of Duty 2 DVD", will have your server up and running in under 5 minutes. This is a huge contrast to what you have to go through currently to get COD2 server running. The first "Call of Duty" server I setup took 2 days to get running correctly. I then learned it had been hacked because of the punkbuster program was not loading. The problems just kept coming. I want this to end as many of the first time users problems as possible.
This version of the server is geared towards being run on a Windows 2000pro or XP computer (It has been tested on Linux PC’s also). You must have the DVD version of Call of Duty 2, or follow the instructions in the help web to create one. You can also copy the files needed to run the server from your CD’s to the VM's hard drive, see the help in the default web page in the VM. PC must have min. 512 Megs of ram, 8 gigs free space, 2.4 GHz CPU or better, Internet connection, DVD or CD drives.
Basic operation of server with DVD:
1. Boot up the appliance. Once the VM is booted a Web page with the Help, installation instructions will be displayed. Please look over this page before proceeding. Minimize it to see a terminal window that is open under it. It is waiting for your input.
2. Insert the Call of Duty 2 DVD disk #1 into the DVD drive.
3. Then in the terminal window type in the word CD-ROM and hit enter. If your computer has a (2) two DVD drives or CD-ROM drives you will need to type in the word cdrom1 or cdrom2. This depends on which one has the disk in it.
4. The terminal will then ask for an RCON password (Remote Console), type in whatever you want, if you forget it just restart the server. (Icon on the desktop to start server.) You will need the password to make changes to the server while playing the game. The tool Remote console for COD2 will also need this password.
5. The terminal will ask for a Server Name, there is a (16) character limit, and this is how it will appear in the server roll call within the game. Type in your server name and hit enter.
Then about a hundred lines of text will scroll by, once it says sending heartbeat to Activision your server is running. It generally takes about 10 minutes for your server to appear in the roll call list within the game. To connect as soon as it is running please refer to the help page. If you have trouble refer to the trouble shooting. Firewalls are usually the biggest issue so there is a help page just for them.
Please refer to the legal descriptions within the appliance’s web pages. I have asked for permission from all of those that I can identify and have made reasonable attempts to contact all authors. I have all emails relating to this. Scripts that are written by me are included under a GPL. Damn Small Linux is included under there GPL. NO PORTION OF ANY ACTIVISION COPYWRITED MATERIAL IS INCLUDED. TRADEMARKS AND PATENTS ARE THE PROPERTY OF THEIR RESPECTIVE OWNERS.
