Description:
MapSnack is a portable OGC compliant map server in a form of virtual appliance. the term 'snack' means 'fast', 'ready to use' even 'emergency use'
1. What does the appliance do...
1.1.MapSnack serves georeferenced map layers (vector or raster based) to the borowser.
1.2. MapSnack is ready to be deployed as OGC compliant web server serving or consuming other WMS or WFS services
1.3. MapSnack started in June 2005 with following ideas behind:
1.3.1 Portable map browsing - nowdays map browsers rely on internet connections. in case connection or server is broken and maps are urgently needed MapSnack can be quickly deployed.
1.3.2 Geospatial data providers might want to add value to customers by providing not only data but appliance for viewing and manipulating with geospatial data. That is encapsulating geospatial data with functionality !
1.3.3 Educational purpose
1.4. last year geospatial boom (Google Earth, GoogleMaps, Virtual Earth) proved that users are interested in consuming and sharing maps. MaSnack is not only about consuming but serving maps and offers platform for building robust map server.
1.5. idealy consumers will download MapSnack mount their DVD with data to the appliance, set up map configuration and are ready to server maps over internet. Normaly however they will want to tweak, secure and customize MapSnack.
2. How was the appliance built
Network is preset to NAT with following address:
address 192.168.203.137
gateway 192.168.203.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.203.0
broadcast 192.168.203.255
3. Detailed instructions to start using the Appliance.
3.1. MapSnack uses static address under NAT, see above, thus NAT setting should be in VM set to :
VMWare -> Edit/VirtualNetwork Settings, tab Host virtual network mapping, VMNet8:
>subnet :
IP 192.168.203.0
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
>NAT: Gateway Ip address: 192.168.203.2
3.2. start Virtual Machine and wait untils it prompts for login in. Optionaly you may login.
3.3. Go to your host machine, open browser and type:
http://192.168.203.137
initial screen of mapsnack should appear.
if not... loggin into mapSnack:
username: root
password: e32a
optionaly type: mc
edit file: /etc/network/interfaces
to this:
-------------------------------
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
#iface eth0 inet static
# address 192.168.203.137
# gateway 192.168.203.2
# netmask 255.255.255.0
# network 192.168.203.0
# broadcast 192.168.203.255
-----------------------------
run : /etc/dhclient
(IP should be obtained from VMWare)
run: ifconfig |grep "inet addr"
(you should se innet address which you type into your host browser)
on initial web screen run pmapper to get first impression, then play with the map and try other hyperlinks on initial page.
