Description:
Knoppix is a very nice CDROM bootable Linux distribution. As a part of the distribution it already provides ways of saving your customized settings to different kinds of writable storage but you still have to learn how to use it and set things up yourself. This application provides you with the convenience - you dont have to set things up, you can just run it and be assured that your settings are saved in between sessions.
(There is also a DVD version of Knoppix which provides a lot more applications on a DVD iso image. This application has been tested with the latest Knoppix DVD & CDROM distribution version 4.0.2.)
I have created a single virtual drive to serve as the writable storage medium. This drive is expandable up to 8gb. Two partitions have been created, a 256mb swap partition and a 256mb persistent storage partition. Knoppix can recognize these partitions automatically. To run it all you have to do is hit the return key when the CDROM image boots up with a prompt. Knoppix would then find the persistent storage and prompt you to confirm whether you want to boot up with the persistent storage.
I have VMWare tools installed in the persistent storage as well as the drive mappings:
/mnt/sda1 is the persistent 256mb partition
/mnt/hgfs/shared is the share folder - I have it mapped to d:shared but it can be changed easily from VM settings.
I did not include the Knoppix CDROM image in the distribution but you should be able to Google and download the image easily. Its about 700mb in size. Just copy your downloaded Knoppix CDROM ISO image to the Knoppix folder and rename the image as KNOPPIX.iso and you are done. A DVD image can be installed similarly.
