Description:
ONR provides a web-based administration frontend for BIND and DHCP, making it easier for administrators to integrate the functionality of the two systems. This virtual appliance contains the Apache web server to front the administration system, ISC BIND and DHCP for DNS and DHCP services, a MySQL database to store the data, PHP for the web interface scripting, and Perl for the background applications.
It should be noted that the primary element of this appliance is the ONR web frontend, which is largely incomplete on the DHCP side, and not quite complete on the DNS side, making this more of a concept appliance. Therefore, this appliance is NOT appropriate for production systems.
1. The ONR appliance allows a system or network administrator to easy setup a DNS and DHCP server with dynamic DNS updates by simply running this VM. The ONR web frontend makes it easy for them to setup their zones and scopes, while the backend scripts implement the BIND and DHCP details. DNS and DHCP services are critical to an organizations functionality, and can be confusing for admins who have never had to deal with it, or have never specifically configured ISC BIND or DHCP. This appliance's uniqueness comes from its ability to provide these critical services simply by having administrators populate information through a web interface accessable from anywhere (or not), from any platform, and configuring their network hardware appropriately to point at the appliance's services.
2. This appliance was built using CentOS, an RHEL-like Linux distribution, in a bare configuration with Apache, BIND, MySQL, PHP, and Perl. Unused packages were removed to reduce the image size.
3. To start using this appliance, configure the network to fit your network configuration, then start the appliance. It will boot into a command prompt, at which point you can log in normally, however, you will most likely be more interested in the web interface. Browse to the IP given to the appliance as such: http:///onr . You also have the option of using HTTPS. Log in using test_usr/test_pwd , at which point you can click on User Management and create an account for yourself and use the rest of the interface functions.
4. All software and operating systems used in this appliance is made publicly available at no cost, through their respective open-source licenses.
