Description:
1. What does the appliance do:
This appliance was made for them how hasn't much money for a shared storage like a SAN or a real NAS. This VM is a small Fedora Core 5 with the iscsi-target from sf.net.
I have made a own harddisk for sharing by iscsi, so change the secound disk and the
share space would be change. Remember iscsi shares no filesystems. With iSCSI you share a block device clients will see it as a scsi-disk.
The appliance has 2 Network interfaces, I use one for administration in "bridge" mode and the other for iscsi in "host-only" mode. Feel free to change, but remember, iSCSI is uncrypted and needs a lot of network bandwidth, so give it a separate Network. I lost both Interfaces in dhcp mode.
2. How was the appliance built
- I decide to use an legacy VM so also ESX and GSX could be used, and updates are simple.
- I made a plain, cleared FC5 install
- the iscsi-target and iscsi-target-kernel packages I made localy were added.
- vmware-tools succeeded after installing vmware-tools-any-update1
- last I typed in an /etc/ietd.conf an copy some comments from the manpage to it
now the service iscsi-target runs well for me, by a larger shared storage the memory-params should be resized and a little bit more RAM should be added.
If you use open-iscsi.org clients (is deliverd with FC5) there is a sample iscsi.conf in the tar file.
3. Detailed instructions to start using the Appliance
There isn't something to do without power on. If dhcp'ed networks are used all works out of the box.
More Documentation:
about iSCSI read:
target: http://iscsitarget.sourceforge.net/wiki
openiscsi-Client: http://www.open-iscsi.org/docs/README
or the RFC 3720
4. Licences
The Fedora Core 5 and the iSCSI-Target software are GPL or LGPL
