Description:
1. KSD stops illicit material from invading your child’s computer by filtering and blocking web content while they surf. It protects your computer from your kids, and your kids from your computer. The goal was to create an appliance for kids to use without worrying about inadvertently damaging files on the host PC.
For Windows hosts, there is an optional host component that restricts the access to the host computer even more. This component replaces the default shell in Windows with custom shell for your "kid" user. The shell prevents users from accessing the host computer and restricts the user to only running the appliance. Once the user logs in, the appliance will automatically start. When the appliance exits, the user will be logged off.
2. We started by installing Slackware 10.2 as the foundation for the KSD appliance. This Linux distribution gave us the ability to only select the necessary packages needed to create a bare minimum Linux desktop. We then proceeded to install all additional third party software components, which included Firefox, Acrobat Reader, Flash Player, OpenOffice, Squid, and squidGuard. Next we configured the squid proxy to utilize the squidGuard plug-in. This plug-in checks requested URLs against a database of over 2 million entries. If the URL matches one of the identified inappropriate categories the proxy automatically blocks the request. To prevent users from circumventing this system we lock down both the web browser and desktop environment.
The Windows shell component was written using the .NET Framework version 1.1. The .NET Framework is included with the shell installation.
3. Start the appliance using the VMWare Player. Complete KDE customization wizard and appliance is usable. For Windows hosts, follow the steps in the VMWareUVAC.pdf that is included with the download to install the optional shell.
