Jabber Instant Message Server Virtual Appliance

1. Introduction and Benefits

This is a virtual server appliance intended to provide the means for
small businesses or organizations to deploy reliable, secure instant messaging
for their organization quickly and efficiently.  It uses open source
technologies and protocols such as Linux and Jabber to provide this service.
This appliance will provide provide a simple, fully
operational, SSL/TLS secured, Jabber IM environment for messaging and file
transfers in less than five minutes of setup, and requires no previous
experience with the Linux operating system or Jabber messaging to complete.

2. Construction

The IM server appliance is constructed on Slackware Linux 10.2, using
kernel version 2.4.31.  Unnecessary packages were not installed, and
unneeded files from the base packages were removed to keep both the download
and deployed sizes compact.  The deployed size for the appliance is
approximately 294MB.  After operating system installation, the VMware
tools were compiled and installed and the jabberd2 server was compiled,
installed, and a startup script created for it.  Templates were made
for its configuration and for the network configuration of the appliance.
A custom setup wizard was added to assist in the configuration.  When
all necessary software had been compiled, all the development tools were
removed.

3. Instructions and Documentation

To begin installation, login with the username 'root' and the password
'password'.  A setup wizard will open.  Follow the
instructions of the wizard--complete setup time should be around one or two
minutes--and allow the appliance to reboot.  Clients can begin
connecting immediately when it has finished rebooting.  Full, step-by-step documentation
(including steps for configuring popular IM clients such as GAIM to connect
to the appliance) is included in the appliance's package at
docs/jabberIM-documentation.html and on the web.
