Learning and Testing Apache Derby Java Database
Derby Database Appliance using Java, JDBC and SQL
Description
The objective of the Derby Database Appliance is learning and testing the Apache Derby relational database using Java, JDBC and SQL. The virtual appliance has installed the operating system Linux Ubuntu 5.10 and Eclipse IDE with Derby nature. I have been a beginner user in Linux, Java, and Derby database but the VMware virtual technology gave me the opportunity to learn and to test these topics very quickly.
I want to share this experience especially with the beginner and intermediate users with interest in these topics.
The components of the Derby Database Appliance are Ubuntu 5.10 , Apache Derby Database and Eclipse IDE.
Ubuntu 5.10 is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available and you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.
Apache Derby is a small database implemented in Java and the developers can easily embed it (with the embedded JDBC driver) in any Java-based solution. Also, Derby works in client/server environment with the network client JDBC driver.
Eclipse IDE is an open source platform and application frameworks for building software. The Eclipse Platform is written in the Java language and comes with extensive plug-in construction toolkits and examples.
The virtual appliance was built with Linux Ubuntu 5.10. I installed it in my host machine without know anything about Linux but with VMware workstation 5.5 is easy to learn new topics like Linux for me. I set up Ubuntu 5.10 to work with Apache Derby database and the useful Eclipse IDE. Sincerely, I worked very satisfied with Ubuntu 5.10 and I did not miss Windows OS absolutely.
The Derby Database Appliance has 3 users and each user has defined characteristics to use.
The "guest" user (username=guest / password=guest) is to learn basic tips of Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
The "tester" user (username=tester / password=tester) is to learn Java languaje and to test the Derby Database.
The "root" user (username=root / password=root) is the super user to manage Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
The "guest" user has 3 documents in his desktop, describing the basic function of Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
The "tester" user has 6 documents in his desktop, describing the function of the appliance to run Java programs and JDBC applications to Apache Derby database. Also, there is an Eclipse icon to start this IDE in the desktop of “tester”.
I was joining in a program named IBM developerWorks Peer Advisors Networks in the Cloudscape project. Cloudscape is the commercial version of Derby database and I started a blog (www.embeddeddatabase.blogspot.com) to test the Derby database with a team implemented with VMware workstation 5.5. I think that the blog was interesting for the IBM forum users because it shows a database lab with Derby/Cloudscape and VMware workstation 5.5.
Additionally, I have begun other blog (www.vmwareappliance.blogspot.com) with detailed explanations about how to use the Derby Database Appliance.
