MediaWiki A standalone Virtual Appliance and/or part of the Online Learning Appliance Suite (OLAS) by Farren Constable, May 24, 2006 The MediaWiki package is possibly the most popular of all the Wiki packages due to the fact that it powers the wikipedia site. I have included a Wiki package in my Suite because in the classes I teach, students will be required to collaboratively create a Wiki knowledge-base of the information they learn in the class. A Wiki could also be built by the teacher for disseminating information to the class. This bit from the FAQ describes it better than I can: ---------- MediaWiki is a Wiki engine; that is, it is software which provides a web site that contains pages which can be edited by users. It is used primarily by the Wikimedia Foundation to power their open-content projects, such as Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Commons. When should I use MediaWiki? MediaWiki is ideal for setting up and running websites where the intent is to allow collaborative editing by users, as in the Wikis described above. With a little tweaking, MediaWiki can be used for a number of other applications, and several users of the software have customized it to meet varying needs. While this MediaWiki server could very easily stand alone and be extremely useful, I consider it to be one component of my Online Learning Appliance Suite (OLAS). Please read the "Online Learning Appliance Suite info.txt" file for more information. Full documentation, additional information, news, etc., is available at http://www.mediawiki.org. This MediaWiki Server is built on Open SuSE 10.1 from opensuse.org. The root password is 'teach'. Simply power up the VM, and once it is at a login prompt, you are ready to connect with a browser at http://server-ip-address/. You may need to log in a root and run the 'ifconfig' command to find out what IP address the VM was given from your DHCP server. Then, point your browser to that IP address as described above. Enjoy!
