Description

Online Learning Appliance Suite - All In One (OLAS-AIO)

A standalone Virtual Appliance and/or part of the Online Learning Appliance Suite (OLAS)

by Farren Constable, May 24, 2006

Please reference the "Online Learning Appliance Suite info.txt" file for more information first. Then, ignore the part about why I put each component of the Suite into separate VM's. At the last minute, I decided to build one VM that has all of the components, except for ILIAS. I will bundle the doc files from each of the components with this VM which you can read for more detailed information about each package. The info in this file, when different, supercedes those files. The primary differences being that each component is in its own folder under htdocs instead of being in the root of htdocs. Some of the default admin accounts and passwords may also be slightly different.

This VM contains all of the following packages:

Moodle: A very robust Learning Management System (LMS)
www.moodle.org
accessed via http://yourserver/moodle/
default admin account/password: admin/teach

iFolder: A file sharing/replication/collaboration system from Novell
www.ifolder.com
Provides for safe, simple, and secure file sharing in a class
(Also has many other fantastic uses outside of the OLAS)
accessed via http://yourserver/ifolder/ (for users)
accessed via http://yourserver/admin/ (for administration)
default admin account/password: admin/simias

MediaWiki: A very popular Wiki server (powers wikipedia)
www.mediawiki.org
Allows for student creation of a Wiki class project site
accessed via http://yourserver/wiki/
default admin account/password: WikiSysop/teach (watch that case)

phpBB: A very powerful and easy to use bulletin board system
www.phpbb.com
The LMS's above have simple forums built in. This is for when those are not good enough.
accessed via http://yourserver/forum/
default admin account/password: admin/teach

php-fusion: A powerful content management system (CMS)
www.php-fusion.co.uk
A possible substitute for the full LMS or a good "student union".
accessed via http://yourserver/fusion/
default admin account/password: admin/teach1 (that's the digit one at the end)

This Online Learning Appliance is everything you need to teach classes online. Please reference each product's web site for details about that product.

Usage: power up the VM, determine its IP address (log in as root with 'teach' as the password, issue an 'ifconfig' command), and then point a browser to that IP address.

This AIO Server is built on Open SuSE 10.0 from opensuse.org.

The root password is 'teach'.
There is one user account named 'teacher' with a password of 'password'.
There is NO GUI installed for this server to keep it lean.
The network is configured to obtain a DHCP address.
YAST is installed and is how I did most of the configuration of the Linux system, including Apahce.
Once the server is up, you can access the server by pointing a web browser to: http://server-ip-address/.
The mySQL root password is also 'teach'.
