Network Management Station - Cacti, Syslog, SNMP Traplog, Apache and MySQL
Network Management Station
Description
VMware™
Network Management Station
Monitor and manage your network devices.
Manage everything from servers, printers, wireless gear to switches and routers.
Anything on your network that has an IP address can be monitored.
Full featured network management station capability.
SNMP and Sysloging, audible alerting and threshold monitoring made user friendly
and cost effective.
1. What does the appliance do?
- Monitors and graphs nearly any SNMP capable device
- Scans networks of your choice for easy addition of
devices to the web based console
- Point any network device Syslog or SNMP Traps to this
server and they will be database logged and optionally alert you of events
- Audible alerting of any downed network device as
desired
- Email alerting of any threshold that is breached as
desired (bandwidth, errors, latency, even the ink in your printer, you name it!)
- Built-in TFTP server compatible with all typical
devices - switches, routers, wireless gear, etc.
** This is not a watered down or light version of anything! **
This is a full blown Apache web server and MySQL database server
compiled from source, not some kit.
Don't let the hard core underlying components mislead you.
After years of my using many high priced commercial products:
This appliance is designed to give small and medium businesses a
full featured solution that justly deserve but normally cannot afford.
2. How was the appliance built?
- More than of year of weekends, evenings and holidays were
spent building this NMS station originally designed as a stand alone UNIX box
- Now using VMware technology, this server application suite
can be run in nearly any environment with relative ease
- Nearly every component was carefully compiled from source
code with very deliberate options enabled and tested operational
- Detailed build notes are freely available and often
updated:
http://members.netjunkies.net/n3ncy/FreeBSD61/
3. Detailed instructions to start using the Appliance and the location of any
other documentation:
- First time setup is done on the console, login as user:
root / password: root
- Run the setup option from the menu provided only to
configure basic IP network settings for your location
- After rebooting with the network settings you selected,
point your web browser to the IP address you setup
- Log in to the web interface as user: admin / password:
admin
- Configure your various network devices to pint to this same
IP for Syslog and Traps
- Add some devices to Cacti for monitoring:
http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/html/
Note: Aside from the main web interface, two (2) other
maintenance interfaces exist for additional features you may want to add:
Webmin:
http://IPaddressYouSet:10000
phpMyAdmin:
http://IPaddressYouSet/phpMyAdmin
These were included
for completeness, most users won't need this, user/pass: admin
4. The names of any licensed operating systems, applications, or other
components in your appliance, and the licenses (names or URLs) under which you
are using them.
To the best of my knowledge all of the items are open
source and free to distribute.
Credit is given to the various software developers, teams,
companies and individuals who all work on open source!
