Description:
Fedora Directory Server 1.02 LDAP Appliance
Fedora Directory Server Virtual Appliance
1. Introduction and Benefits
This virtual machine appliance allows developers or system administrators
interested in exploring the capabilities of the Fedora LDAP Directory Server
a means to do so quickly, in an isolated environment, with all the benefits,
such as snapshots, cloning and copying, and pausing that a virtual machine
brings to the development process.  It is useful to all developers
working with LDAP-enabled applications, and is also of great use to system
administrators as a test platform or as a department-level directory server.
LDAP is used in many enterprise applications, and is the foundation of
most single sign-on initiatives.  Fedora Directory Server is based on
Red Hat's enterprise directory server product offering, Red Hat Directory
Server.
2. Construction
The appliance is based on Fedora Core 5, which is installed
with a console-only package set.  Fedora Directory Server and its
dependencies were then installed, and checks added to reconfigure the
machine and directory server on first login.
3. Instructions
and Documentation
To begin using the appliance, login with the username 'root' with the
password 'password'.  A brief series of setup wizards will open, asking
for a new hostname and network configuration, and lastly for the directory
server's configuration.  When the wizards are complete, the system is
ready for LDAP connections. Note that it is important that DNS
service be available, and that a DNS entry be made for the appliance
before performing setup. If the DNS server cannot be contacted or
an entry matching the hostname of the appliance cannot be located
during the Directory Server setup, it will create an error message.
To access web-based administration for the server,
go to http://<servername>:<adminport>/
The full URL will be shown at the end of setup.
For example: http://fds.redbudcomputer.local:64957/
A Java administration console is also included in the FDS package.
Since the appliance does not include X windows, one needs to run it
from a remote host, or install X ('yum -y groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" &&
yum -y groupinstall "X Window System"').
For information to run the console on Microsoft Windows cf.
http://directory.fedora.redhat.com/wiki/Howto:WindowsConsole.
Some of the information there can also be useful when copying the
client to other platforms.
Links to the complete documentation for the Fedora Directory server are
available at http://directory.fedora.redhat.com/wiki/Documentation
Consulting the Installation Guide is particularly recommended
before setting up the appliance, but a snapshot before booting is a
nice alternative for those wanting to "dive in."
