Description:
Secure Video Player appliance decrypts an encrypted video file, in this case Night of the Living Dead, and streams it to a video player. It demonstrates a secure software delivery mechanism which can be used to play media files or distribute and run demonstration software packages.
A potential application of Secure Video Player would be a distribution mechanism for pre-release movies or albums to reviewers. The motion picture and recording industries have had major difficulty in this area, even going to the lengths of sending out DVD and CD players with the media locked inside.
Secure Video player could be made more secure by leveraging the technology of VMWare ACE. Furthermore, the decryption key could be retrieved over the Internet. This would allow for features such as central user registration, time-based expiration, etc.
Secure Video Player leverages VMPlayer, Ubuntu Linux, MPlayer, and OpenSSL. It started out as the Secure Browser Appliance, running Ubuntu Linux. MPlayer was chosen as the video player due to its high quality and ability to play from a pipe. OpenSSL was chosen for its command-line encryption and decryption utilities, although numerous other options exist. Finally, Night of the Living Dead was used (downloaded from archive.org) as it is both a Classic and in the Public Domain.
We created a shell script to decrypt and launch the player in one shot using pipes, and configured Gnome to run the script on startup. Firefox and other features were removed. We didn't completely lock the OS down or strip it bare, so that the operational details can be more easily examined.
