Description:
The primary objective of this appliance was like Britons said: “Give you the full monty”,
So, originally It was a Gentoo fully working and up to date virtual machine, compiled fully for Centrino (Pentium-M) platform and fully compatible with P4/Xeon processors and the contents of the actual package.
But after many days and effort I could not shrink the file to less of 2.6 GB complete using 7zip, and 3.6 GB with zip and 2.9 Gb with Bzip2.
So feel free to ask to VmWare for the file, If you need it, Of course I will kindly provide to you.
The Gentoo/Gnu Network appliance fulfills the “Saint Grial” of making Network appliances in a very fast way, (so fast that competes with many enterprise tools, very expensive and also closed).
The logic order using this very simple (and effective):
Gentoo Desktop OS---> configure my setttings ---> Elaborate myiso.iso ---> put this ISO in whatever medium you want and boot it (CD, HD, USB, Smartmedia, Secure digital, etc).
Vmware was also extremely productive to me, because I can elaborate the ISO and test it fully without a restart, when it is OK, with simple commands can be exported to the medium without any kind of concern.
The common application of this approach is astonishing:
In barely 5 min, I can change settings completely, and produce many custom Network Appliances so fast.
To have this advanced tools. The real problem is to install Gentoo, Which is a little newbie harsh environment, But, if I give you so, you are in business! (Remember the primary and not achieved goal, missing but existent, so ask for it to Vmware).
The Network appliance is capable of provide DNS masquerade, Iproute, Split, Shorewall, Iptables, OpenVPN, NAT, and if you modify it a little boa server, And the size?, 12 mb.
So, the actual package is a little view and files to allow you practice and see for yourself what a Network appliance can do for you.
The ggnap.zip contains the following directories:
/config - is the files who originated the Network applance, to show you how logically and simple are.
/documentation - this letter and the Gentoo and OpenISP.net document if you want to install the “builder and rebuilder” of this appliance in foreign Linux distro than Gentoo.
/virtualmachines – is a Vmware Virtual machine, virtually empty (This due to the originally already discussed problems with give you the full Gentoo operating system). So the ISO can be run and fully modified and tested.
/isos contains two files: ggnap.iso and ggnapdhcp.iso this are two variations of the Network appliance:
ggnap.iso boots in a traditional way using IP 192.168.0.20 gw 192.168.0.1.
ggnapdchp.iso boots using DHCP, this means you can control the beheaviour of the two virtual cards externally by your DCHP server. The virtual MAC addresses are:
00:0C:29:39:36:B5
00:0C:29:39:36:BF
Please feel free to test the isos on any hardware you want, the “Plug and play” scheme of hotplug and coldplug in Gentoo assures to you the correct booting of the Device to start serving you without the need of install a OS. So this approach make extremely viable for disaster recovering and of course cheap and good routing in a home net.
The root password is “ “ (none, empty, null, vacio), so you can view the system logic and modify it. (remember that gentoo uses Nano command).
I tested extensively both in a Portwell PPAP-100 Embeeded hardware but please tell me any questions or ways to improve the files and the overall project.
The future is divided in two goals:
The first is to complete the minimizing of the Gentoo Constructor OS to a more handy tarball or zipball.
The second is to implement a tiny web server, and a Dynamic DNS client. To fully emulate my server just in case of a severe problem.
Thank you and hope you find useful my two cents. ;-)
