Description:
This is a basic Suse 9.3 Minimal install, with Groundwork Opensource Monitor installed and ready to go.
The target audience is for time poor small IT companies and small business in general to be able to monitor their systems and network devices in a way which is quick and reliable. Nothing truly amazing here, but just has the hard work taken out of it so that within about 10 minutes including vmware player installation time, you will be up and running with a monitoring system based on NAGIOS by Groundworkopensource.com.
2. Basic Suse 9.3 installation, with Mysql and Groundwork Opensource Monitor installed. Configured basic system settings, firewall switched off. Highly practical and suits it's purpose very well.
3. How to use.
- Copy the zip file and the vmware player installer onto a DVD / CD / Flash drive.
- Go into a small business (one of your clients presumably), and install vmware
player on a spare machine or under utilized server.
- Copy this zipped vmware machine across to the server
- Open the virtual machine, wait for it to load. Click KEEP otherwise the networking doesn't load properly. I assume this is because the network card changes to a new MAC address when you select "new". Loading should only take about 2-3 minutes.
- Login as root / password
- Run YaST (type YaST at the prompt), and configure networking (Network Devices --> Network Card --> Change) to suit your requirements. I advise to configure the network card with a static IP address (on the same subnet of course). **The machine is set to 192.168.5.100, which is probably NOT on your current network!)** For example, if your server is 192.168.0.2, your gateway and dns 192.168.0.1, and your workstations 192.168.0.5-20, you could configure this machine as 192.168.0.100. Don't forget to set the gateway (under routing in YaST) and the DNS.
- Change the root password asap, by typing passwd at the prompt.
- Point a web browser to the new IP that you set (ie http://192.168.0.100)
- Login as admin / admin
- You can now configure this new installation, without any of the hassles of installing it which I found to be a task and a half.
- Please change the default passwords for admin and user joe.
- To add hosts to monitor, click on the "configuration ezy" tab, and then "hosts". I have found that mostly the "Discover" feature works well. Otherwise click on "New" and start experimenting.
- Even using the basic "ping" service is more than enough to get you started. You can do some very advanced things with this installation, check out www.groundworkopensource.com for more information.
- don't forget to turn the notification on so that you get messaged and paged if there are any problems.
- click commit, and then commit again to make your changes final.
HINTS:
* open port 80 on your router / firewall, and point it towards this new vmware appliance (eg 192.168.0.100) so that you can access it from your office / remotely over the net.
* get an account with www.dyndns.org and the dynamic DNS service, install the client on the server, and that way you can always access your clients mini-monitoring system from the net eg http://client.getmyip.com/ will take you straight into their monitoring system if you use the first hint!
* To start this particular image when the PC starts, you might want to add a shortcut to your startup folder. Add something like....
"C:Program FilesVMwareVMware Playervmplayer.exe" "C:vmwareSUSE Linux.vmx"
where C:vmwareSUSE Linux.vmx where the decompressed zip files is.
Obviously this doesn't apply to vmware player for linux... :-)
* Make sure you install this on a machine with plenty of disk space if you plan to have a big monitoring system. The virtual HDD can get up to 40GB in size.
4. The only software included in this is Suse Linux, MySQL and Groundwork Opensource Monitor. They are all covered under the GPL.
