[1] Introduction and motivation The virtual appliance "vdotlrn" was born and assembled in and for both the research and teaching context of the Institute of Information Systems and New Media at the Vienna University of Economics. The original intention was to provide a "ready-made" development environment both to researchers, developers and students affiliated to our Institute that is closely involved in research and development tasks for the web-based community framework OpenACS (http://openacs.org) and its eLearning extension .LRN (http://dotlrn.org). This idea originated from our experiences with the demanding installation and configuration of this framework and the underlying environment and entry barriers for students initially feeling uncomfortable in non-win environments. Moreover, we intend to provide a stand-alone show case for framework extensions devised and realised at our Institute and to give people interested in OpenACS / .LRN a first-time-experience sandbox for playing around. vdotlrn becomes increasingly used at our Institute, i.e. in an advanced programming course and in the context of bachelor and master theses and their prototype implementations. [2] Notable features The primary objective was to provide a ready-made and ready-for-use instance of an OpenACS / .LRN platform. Therefore, we ... # considered user comfort in terms of automatic or background initialisations scripts, automatic extraction and provision of context information (IP address identification) etc. # considered developer comfort by allowing for plug'n'play sharing of scripts between the host and guest machine (preconfigured Samba or NFS alternatively), ssh, remote access to data base backend etc. A detailed feature set and further hints can be found at http://media.wu-wien.ac.at/download/vdotlrn. [3] A how-to Detailed instructions on how to use the appliance are given at http://media.wu-wien.ac.at/download/vdotlrn [4] Legal considerations As can be seen from the list of applications involved and the detailed steps of creating the appliance provided at http://media.wu-wien.ac.at/download/vdotlrn, there are no proprietary applications or artefacts involved. The applications designed, realised and delivered by VMware itself were used according to the limitations known to the authors of this appliance.
