Description:
1. Splunk(www.splunk.com) is a log file analyzing server.Just treat it as a hybrid of google,del.icio.us,syslog server and much more.It can accept all kinds of log files(not only linux ones, also windows ones, such as iis, sqlserver etc) and index them. You can use an ajax based app to search and analyze your log files.
2. Splunk is installed on a built-from-scratch linux.Only kernel, glibc, busybox, dropbear, grub are included, which make OS less than 25M.Kernel is cut according to vmware's specification and nothing unnecessary(modules and drivers for instance) is included.
3. Just start the vm.Since it's a server, you need login(root:splunk) and get it's ip(ifconfig),then point your brower to http://ip:8000 and you are ready to go.
Also ssh server is provide on port 22.
For windows log files, further steps need to be taken.smbfs and cifs is compiled into kernel so you can either mount your log file shares manually or put them in fstab.
4. Linux and the base apps are GPL.
The Splunk installed is not GPL, but is redistributable subject to the "FREE SOFTWARE LICENSE" portion of http://www.splunk.com/index.php/articles/news/66
