Virtual Firewall
"Shrink-wrapped" firewall for Windows or other host systems
Description
General purpose systems cannot be connected to the Internet without
a firewall unless the administrator wishes to invest a lot of time
patching and monitoring the system for attacks. The traditional
firewall protecting a LAN from outside attacks is a historic relic
that cannot protect machines from internal attacks, or machines
(such as laptops) that can be taken outside the LAN. Some proposed
solutions to this problem included small (cigarette-box sized)
firewalls that could protect portable devices. Rather than carrying
yet another gizmo and associated accessories (cables, chargers,
etc.) we created a firewall that runs under the host operating
system in a VMware virtual machine. The paper below describes how
we configured the host Windows 2000 OS to use the firewall for its
communications with the outside world, and the configuration of the
OpenBSD-based firewall
