Description:
This Entry is for a virtual appliance that will add a whole new dimension to server Virtualisation by enabling Virtualisation of Mainframes(System/370, ESA/390 and z/Architecture) on an X86 platform
1. This is basically a Virtual Machine running ubuntu linux with a Hercule freeware Emulator built onto it. Most medium size and large corporations have a huge installed base of legacy systems and a large amount of their codebase and business logic residing on these systems. These systems are typically very limited and expensive adding to the overall cost of IT. At the same time a lot of these organisations typically also have a large installed base of x86 servers which are relatively less expensive and often underutilised. A Virtual appliance that allows organisations to utilise these x86 systems for their legacy work would allow them to at the very lleast conserve capacities ad better use them on the legacy systems and at the same time give developement and testing teams a viable alternative to execute mainframe projects on x86 systems. In the best case scenario, These organisations may, depending on their experience with Mainframe virtualisation choose a virtualised solution in production, as it would then also open up possibilities to leaverage the inherend advantages of virtualisation in DR scenarios and in quickly scaling up and scaling down their infrastructure to meet dynamic business needs.
2. This application was an installation of a freeware Hercules System/370, ESA/390, and z/Architecture Emulator on ubuntu linux. The particular flavour of linux was chosen mainly because of its reputation for easy installability and user friendliness. Potetially, much smaller linux distirbutions (such as damn small linux) could also be used, dramatically reducing the appliance size. It would also be possible to bootstap the emulator to the guest OS, so that the appliance boots directly into a Mainframe environment. It would be required however that the user install a licensed Mainframe OS, such as OS/390 etc... as these cant be distirbuted with the appliance due to licensing requirements. Once could also install a terminal emulator, say tn3270 et... to provide a much more graphical experience than the current console based experience.
3. User names to login are vmware and root. Password for both is 123456. Once logged in to run the emulator, run /root/hercules.sh
4. The ubuntu OS comes as freeware and is covered by the GPL ( available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GnuFreeLicense?highlight=%28license%29) and the hercules license can be found at http://www.hercules-390.org/herclic.html
