Description:
The NoWeb virtual appliance provides an out of the box filtering solution for web content. It features nearly 70,000 filters which cover not only the URLs of the sites, but their content as well. It is also the only free filtering solution with zero-config authentication.
The appliance was first built by custom writing the filtering daemon in C. NoWeb features a plugin based filter system for easy expandability and one of the fastest processing speeds available. NoWeb also features a easy to use web based administrative system. All of this is built on top of the well known PostgreSQL database, Squid web proxy and Lighttpd web server. Everything was then packaged into a bundle using Ubuntu 6.06 which features 5 years of server-side support. One last touch was to make a bootsplash screen using the fantastic usplash system.
Starting with the appliance is easy: just turn it on. Once booted it will walk you through setting up your network and setting a root password. Once this is complete, you can access the web based administration site to configure your user access. Then just set the proxy settings in your prefered browser to point to NoWeb as directed and you are all set to go.
