Description:
This appliance provides a home or SOHO network with a robust, full-featured
network security solution based on the popular open source IPCop firewall.
The following add-ons for IPCop are also included to further enhance the
level of security available to the network it is protecting:
- BlockOutTraffic-2.3-GUI-b4, which provides fine-grained outgoing
traffic from internal to external networks
- Copfilter-0.82.1, which provides a collection of transparent proxies
for spam and anti-virus filtering
- ipcop-advproxy-1.2.2, which provides an advanced web proxy capability
with features too numerous to mention
- ipcop-calamaris-2.1.0, which provides a detailed log parser and report
generator
- ipcop-urlfilter-1.7.0, wrovides detailed filtering capabilities to
block unwanted domains, URLS and files
Finally, VMware Tools has been fully integrated so that this can function
as a turnkey appliance when run on a VMware server based platform such as
ESX, GSX or VMware Server.
When coupled with other appliances the user can run a completely virtual
infrastructure for their community of users. With the VPN capabilities
present within IPCop, their users can access the infrastructure resources
as easily from remote as they can when connected to the local network.
The appliance was built using the CVS version of IPCop 1.4.x, which at the
time of submission, is 1.4.11. In addition to the default installation that
results from building the system, this appliance also includes the complete
Linux From Scratch (LFS) platform that IPCop was built from. The LFS
distribution was included so that the appliance can run VMware Tools and
the user can easily upgrade to a new version, as well as install the
VMware Tools that may be specific to the VMware platform they intend to
run this appliance on.
Additional modifications have been made to the system to complete the
integration of VMware Tools with this appliance and are included in a
separate tar file for review.
Finally, the appliance is distributed in a state that guarantees site security
is not compromised due to duplicated SSH key pairs or SSL certificates. A
small script is provided so that the user can easily reset these keys and
certificates on an on-going basis if the need arises.

included within the distribution as doc/VMware_Appliance_IPCop-1.4.11.pdf.
Additional PDF documents for the major components of the appliance are also
included in the same directory. A VPN HowTo document has been included as
well.
No compilation copyright or license is encumbered against this appliance
aside from the pre-existing licenses and/or conditions of all individual
components that went into the creation of this system.
The major components of this appliance are either licensed under the GPL or
are distributed with their original license in tact, such as Apache, Perl,
etc.
Only the installed components of the VMware Tools distribution as performed
by the installation script within the tar file are included with this
appliance.
All other rights continue to exist as per holders of copyright and/or licenses
of all included components.
