Sakai is an online Collaboration and Learning Environment. Many users of Sakai deploy it to support teaching and learning, ad hoc group collaboration, support for portfolios and research collaboration.
This community initiative is backed by IBM, SUN and a lot other interested parties. It is a strong contender to proprietary and legacy LMS like Blackboard. Its light weight and its implementations are widespread and spread all over the world.
Note: After starting your appliance, it will use Bridged networking and you can log on to the appliance and check its IP address by typing: ifconfig -a. Now if the ip address was, say, 192.168.2.2 then you will go to your host operating system , meaning your machine's browser and type the following: http://192.168.2.2:8080/portal, this will open up the portal. type username = admin and password = admin and Voila! you're logged into your Sakai 2.2.2 system.
Note2: Please do look at the instructions I posted on my blog!
Note 3: Also, the appliance is a tar.gz file. Use Winrar or download it for free and use it to unzip this appliance on your computer.
