5 Stars - A Must Have!

Both from a business and home use perspective the Astaro appliance is the best I've ever had the pleasure of using. The system is very robust and feature rich. We have deployed and used Barracuda Spam Firewall, Sonicwall, Cisco PIX and Iprism appliances over the years and none of them even came close to the Astaro appliance.

Good tool, but some parts can be much better

I deployed Astaro SG on ESXi, It worked very except several things: - there is no detailed documentation how to make it work 'like vShield'(with bridge mode, this can be done and not too hard but can be problematic initially) - VPN connection modes works...strange. -- L2TP VPN makes all servers behind it (and Astaro SG console itself too) inaccessible from _all_ machines(even not using VPN). (Both using internal DHCP server and pool) -- PPTP just doesn't connect -- Cisco VPN can be used but regulary terminates after 2hours 9 minutes(?!) and you need to setup NAT settings manually for Cisco VPN to work at all. -- _Full_ transparent mode sometimes also causes problems with VPNs - Licensing module sometimes works strange (it does not count ips where it should) In conclusion:very good thing if you need complex Firewall/WebSecurity appliance Free for home use (up to 50 protected IPs and no cluster funcionality - which is not needed in this configuratio

My personal recommendation...

I used the Home User Version of the Astaro Security Gateway already for many years and also liked to test other UTM Appliances from time to time. Still think Astaro is easiest to manage and best of all tested up to now. Now finally deployed it in my company and still love it! Very good Antispam capabilities, the Webproxy works like a charm and I like a lot to play with the tons of features. I also like the Mailmanager. Can only recommend everyone to give it a try.

Effective, simple, comprehensive, efficient: perfect!

After several months of use on a VMware Server on Atom 330, I can confirm that this is the best firewall / antivirus ever tested. Very efficient and resource efficient despite the small server hardware used for this test. Less than 1% CPU on average one atom and 400mb ram used. Perfect! ASTARO, thank you!

Free for home use

Unlike other Virtual Appliances, this is easy to configure and free for home use. It supports up to 10 VPN connections.
