VMware vCenter ADM 6.1 Licensing Information
VMware vCenter Application Discovery Manager (ADM) version 6.1 is available as Virtual Appliances (VA) which are VM images that includes the OS as well as the relevant ADM software components installed on it. A VA can run one or multiple ADM components depending on the deployment mode selected. An ADM VA is created by deploying VM templates in Open Virtualization Format (OVF) onto the ESX or ESXi server (3.5 and above). After deployment, the VA (s) are powered up and then standard appliance settings, network and user information are configured.
With the release of VMware vCenter Application Discovery Manager (ADM) version 6.1, VMware has introduced a license key to activate the software.
- License keys are simple 25-character strings. (e.g. AXXXG-2XXXE-WXXX3-6XXXP-YXXX3).
- License administration is built directly into ADM.
- Customers receive one license key to activate ADM using the ADM Server key. The ADM Instance key is for license compliance only.
- Each license key encodes the maximum number of managed servers (physical and virtual) that can be discovered.
Once deployment is completed, the license key needs to be entered to activate the software.

Where do I find the license key I need to use to activate ADM 6.1?
You will find your license key(s) in My VMware under Accounts > Licenses. The key(s) that activate the product are tied to “vCenter Application Discovery Manager – Servers”. The “vCenter Application Discovery Manager Instance” license key(s) are for your reference only and reflect your product license compliance.
Within the licensing portal, license keys are visible to users that are designated to an authorized role on a support and subscription contract. Contract roles include Primary License Administrator “PLA”, Secondary License Administrator “SLA” and Support Administrator “SA”, and each role grants a specific level of access within the portal.
Where do I enter the license key in the product?
For new implementations, the admin user is automatically taken to the license section for entering the license key. Likewise, if an existing customer upgrades to ADM 6.1, the admin user is taken first to the licensing section to enter the license key. This license section is located under MANAGE then SYSTEM then LICENSING which is where they are prompted to enter the license key.
Is my license key perpetual?
Yes. For customers who have purchased the product, these license keys are perpetual -no expiration date.
Is my license key unique?
Yes. Each license key is automatically generated when an order is placed and includes the number of managed servers purchased. When the license key is entered into the product, it activates all the product' s functionality and at the same time records the number managed servers you have licensed.
ADM will block the viewing of discovery information if the license key ( Serial # ) does not exist, has expired (for evaluations only) or is invalid.
What happens if the maximum number of managed servers included in the license key is exceeded?
ADM does not disable discovery of additional servers, nor does it prevent you for accessing the product if the maximum number of licensed managed servers is exceeded. The product will however display a message informing you have exceeded the maximum of managed servers allotted under your ADM contract. You should contact your VMware Sales Representative to purchase additional licenses to be in license compliance.
My products and quantities listed in the Licensing Portal are inaccurate, what can I do?
What if the key does not activate the software?
Verify that you are using the vCenter Application Discovery Manager – Servers key and not the vCenter Application Discovery Manager Instance key.
Verify that you are inserting the key into the correct place in the product. You enter your license key in the product under MANAGE then SYSTEM then LICENSING.
I am an existing customer, do I need to request ADM 6.1 to receive the licenses?
No, if your Support and Subscription (SnS) contract is current as of 19 August 2010, no action is required on your part. Your keys are already available in the VMware Licensing portal.
Will I forfeit the use of ADM 5.x or 6.0 after I upgrade to ADM 6.1?
No. You will retain licenses for both versions but must not deploy licenses in excess of your entitlement.
Is there any value to update immediately to the newest version of ADM?
ADM 6.1 adds a very attractive option to expand deployments with new VM collectors and not have to invest additional funds in physical appliance collectors. You can download and implement as many VM Collectors needed to completely span your data centers and remote sites without having to worry about the budget to buy physical appliances.
Can I continue to use my physical appliances?
Yes. You can continue to update your physical deployments with version 6.1. You will need to select the “Physical Appliance” update in the Download portal. You can also expand your current physical appliance deployments with additional virtual VM collectors when expanding discovery coverage in your data centers. ADM VM components are inter-compatible with existing ADM physical appliance deployments.
Can I buy more licenses for the physical appliance (version 6.0) after the VM version (version 6.1) is general available?
No. The only version that will be available after 19 August 2010 will be the VM version (version 6.1). No more hardware shipments will occur.
Can ADM be deployed as a mixed physical and virtual appliance methodology?
Yes. ADM VM collectors can be used with a physical appliance aggregator if and only if they are running the same code version (e.g. ADM 6.1).
Can physical appliance deployments be extended with virtual appliance collectors at no extra charge?
Yes. With ADM 6.1, current physical appliance deployments will work and are compatible with VM deployments. Physical deployments can be extended by adding new VM Collectors that can link and report into the physical aggregator. You can set up as may VM collectors as needed across the data centers so as to ensure adequate discovery coverage and value with ADM.
I have a hardware maintenance contract for ADM I purchased from EMC, is it still active?
Your hardware maintenance contract is still maintained by EMC. You must work with EMC directly regarding renewing or canceling your contract.
