SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware provides eligible VMware vSphere customers with a free enterprise-class Linux operating system—complete with patches and updates.

Check to see if you qualify for SLES for VMware by visiting the Complimentary Product Eligibility Portal. You will be asked to submit the license keys for the vSphere hosts where you plan to deploy SLES in order to verify your active vSphere support and subscription (SnS) contracts.

Activation and Download

After you have verified your eligibility, you will receive an activation code (one per qualified vSphere license key) that will allow you to turn on the patch stream for SLES for VMware. If you are already a SUSE customer with an account, please log in with your existing SUSE user name and password. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one before logging in to activate your subscription. Once you have registered your activation code, download the SLES for VMware ISO file.

Copy the ISO image to VMware storage or other local storage accessible from VMware vCenter Server. Next, create a virtual machine with the ISO image connected, selecting either 32-bit or 64-bit as the guest operating system, according to your version. Power on the virtual machine and follow the installation workflow. Note that you can run as many virtual machines as you want per qualified vSphere license.

Use your activation code from VMware to ensure you receive all updates and patches; it also allows you to sign up for streamlined access to maintenance and support from VMware.

Finally, configure your SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for VMware as you would for a physical system.
