vCloud Air - Accessing the Virtual Machine Remote Console

The VMware Remote Console, or VMRC, allows users to access a virtual machine’s console functions from supported web browsers. Here, we take a look at the two ways to get into the console.

1. Access VMRC through the vCloud Air Portal

The first way to access the VMware Remote Console is through the vCloud Air portal:

  1. If you’re not already logged in, go to https://vchs.vmware.com/login and log in to vCloud Air.
  2. From the Dashboard, click the desired virtual data center.

  3. Click the Virtual Machines tab to see the available virtual machines, and then select the desired virtual machine.

  4. From the pull-down menu, select Launch Console to access the virtual machine’s console.
  • VMRC creates a connection to the virtual machine.
  • This allows users to access the console to configure the virtual machine without setting up a network connection directly to it.
  • With VMRC, you do not need to set up NATs, firewall rules, or gateways. You simply have direct access to the virtual machine’s console through VMRC.

2. Access VMRC through the vCloud Director UI

The second way to access the VMware Remote Console is through the vCloud Director UI

  1. Return to the virtual data center and click Manage in vCloud Director on the Virtual Machines tab.

  2. After vCloud Director pulls up the vApp, click its icon to access the remote console.

  • This console provides more options because it comes directly from vCloud Director.
  • For example, you can insert and remove media, start and stop, and reset the virtual machine directly from this console.
