VMware ESX Server Wins CNET 'Enterprise Product of the Year' Award
PALO ALTO, Calif., October 14, 2003 - VMware, Inc., the global leader in virtual machine software for industry-standard systems, today announced that VMware ESX Server, enterprise-class virtual machine software for the most demanding production environments, won the CNET Networks Enterprise Product of the Year award.
The CNET Technology awards give recognition to the companies and technologies "that have achieved exceptional success and demonstrated technological leadership in the business and technology arenas. These independent awards recognize strategic excellence, marketplace impact, innovative new technology, and above all, practical developments that help IT professionals and business decision makers harness technology as a critical business tool." The CNET Technology award finalists and winners were the result of over 200 submitted entries, 500 reader nominations and 2,000 votes.
"The number of entries for the inaugural CNET Enterprise Product of the Year award was overwhelming, and it was a tough job to produce the shortlist of four companies," said Matt Loney, editor of ZDNet and co-chair of the judges. "Picking a winner from such a wide range of high quality entries was particularly difficult, but the judges felt that VMware ESX Server stood out for its innovation in a number of areas. In particular, it holds promise for companies looking to use spare server resources, making important advances towards commercial utility computing."
For more than two years, enterprises have been virtualizing their computing environments using VMware ESX Server. ESX Server partitions multi-processor servers into virtual machines or smaller one or two CPU servers, allowing multiple operating systems, including Microsoft Windows and Linux, to run simultaneously and independently on the same industry-standard server or blade. ESX Server is used to consolidate underutilized servers, driving utilization rates of individual servers from less than 5% to over 80%.
"We're honored that VMware ESX Server has been recognized as the Enterprise Product of the Year by CNET," said Michael Mullany, vice president of marketing at VMware. "This award once again validates the choice of ESX Server by thousands of customers that have increasingly made ESX Server their standard for server consolidation."
VMware ESX Server is the first product to take advantage of VMware Control Center, a groundbreaking new product that truly advances utility computing. With Control Center, enterprises are able to centrally manage all of their virtual machines and maximize utilization of their entire server infrastructure. Using VMotion technology in Control Center, enterprises can respond to changing business demands in real-time and move virtual machines from one physical server to another with continuous service availability.
