Of Indiana University’s 50 Oracle workloads running on RS/6000, the OnCourse instance is the heaviest in terms of concurrency and CPU. OnCourse peaks annually at 10 P5 cores. We detail our proof-of-concept porting the OnCourse peak workload to a single vSphere VM with about 100% scalability to spare.

Consolidating servers, storage, and applications can provide optimized operating expenses and capital expenses for customers, who are increasingly implementing virtualization to consolidate multiple applications onto fewer shared managed servers. This solutions describes that, by using VMware’s virtualization and V-Max storage technologies, applications can be decoupled from the underlying hardware and infrastructure. The total amount of hardware can be consolidated and fully utilized to provide a more cost effective and energy efficient solution. This solution demonstrates the capabilities of vSphere in conjunction with the Symmetrix V-Max platform to show how consolidation can be fully realized.

Reza Taheri is a recognized guru in the performance field with 27 years at Bell Labs, HP, and VMware, all focused on high-end performance analysis. He was the lead engineer of the teams that optimized the performance of HP\'s unix H/W and S/W for OLTP applications. He was the lead or a consultant on nearly all HP-UX TPC-C disclosures listed on www.tpc.org, establishing new heights in performance of transaction processing systems with an SMP system with 128 cores. Consolidating servers, storage, and applications can provide optimized operating expenses and capital expenses for customers, who are increasingly implementing virtualization to consolidate multiple applications onto fewer shared managed servers. This solutions describes that, by using VMware’s virtualization and V-Max storage technologies, applications can be decoupled from the underlying hardware and infrastructure. The total amount of hardware can be consolidated and fully utilized to provide a more cost effective and energy efficient solution. This solution demonstrates the capabilities of vSphere in conjunction with the Symmetrix V-Max platform to show how consolidation can be fully realized.

He was the lead or a consultant on nearly all HP-UX TPC-C disclosures listed on www.tpc.org, establishing new heights in performance of transaction processing systems with an SMP system with 128 cores. At VMware, he is focusing on optimizing the platform for Tier-1 applications such as databases.
