Instructions for Creating and Using the Driver Disk to Install VMware ESX Server

  1. Unzip the downloaded driver file to extract the floppy image (.flp).

    Using Windows:

    1. Use the WinZip program or a similar utility to unzip sym53c8xx-1.7.3c-for-ESX-2.5.zip.
    2. Rename sym53c8xx-1.7.3c-for-ESX-2.5.flp to a name with less then seven characters, for example, driver.flp.

    Using Linux:

    • unzip sym53c8xx-1.7.3c-for-ESX-2.5.zip

  2. Create a driver floppy disk from the extracted floppy image.

    Using Windows:

    1. Do one of the following:
      • Choose Start > Run and browse to the dosutils folder on your ESX Server 2.5 installation CD. Select rawrite.exe.
      • In a command window, run 'rawrite.exe' located in the dosutils folder on your ESX Server 2.5 installation CD.
      • When prompted, specify the location of the floppy image you renamed, the floppy drive name, and press Enter.

    Using Linux:

    • Use the dd command: dd if= of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k
      For example: dd if=sym53c8xx-1.7.3c-for-ESX-2.5.flp of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k

  3. Boot the target server with the ESX 2.5 installation CD.
  4. At the initial boot screen (boot:), type driverdisk.
    You see the Install Supplemental Drivers screen.
  5. Choose Driver Disk.
  6. Insert the driver disk you created in Step 2 into the server's floppy disk drive and choose OK.
  7. If you are prompted for additional disks, choose Continue.
  8. After the driver disks are installed, choose Continue.
  9. Proceed with your server installation normally.
  10. Eject the driver disk just prior to rebooting the server.
